Yoshida-Martin, Malone earn top gongs in Queensland
KICKING off a big awards week across Australia, the 81st J.A. Grogan Medal and Emma Zielke Medal were award in the Sunshine State with Redland Victoria Point’s Craig Malone and University of Queensland’s Luka Yoshida-Martin the respective recipients.
Taking place on Sunday night, Malone was rewarded for his outstanding through the ruck. Palm Beach Currumbin’s Tom Simpson actually finished on top of the leaderboard but was ineligible to win due to suspension. Simpson did however earn the Coaches MVP for the year. Noosa’s Rory McKenzie took the QAFL Rising Star Award.
A former Brisbane AFLW player, Yoshida-Martin was one of the most consistent and influential midfielders throughout the year, and was deservedly took home the Emma Zielke Medal. Another former AFLW Lion in Aspley’s Ella Smith won the Coaches MVP, while Lions Academy graduate ruck Monique Corrigan won the Rising Star Award.
It was a day for former elite-level Lions with forward Matt Hammelmann booting 110 goals for Redland Victoria Point this season to run away with the Ray Hughson Medal for the most majors in the season, while Kendra Blattman‘s 37 majors was enough for the Southport tall to take home the QAFLW’s leading goalkicker.
