AFTER suffering defeat at the hands of the Bulldogs only a few weeks earlier, Subiaco was able to exact revenge on South Fremantle in Round 12 of the West Australian Football League (WAFL) Women’s competition. The Lions got up despite an inaccurate 8.12 (60), defeating the Bulldogs by 47 points to keep in touch with the top four. Whilst Peel Thunder had the bye, Swan Districts retook third spot thanks to a 53-point win over West Perth, whilst East Fremantle remained undefeated with a 26-point victory over Claremont in a top of the table clash.

East Fremantle further solidified its status as the team to beat in the WAFL Women’s competition, defeating Claremont in a top of the table clash by 26 points. The Sharks lead by a goal at quarter time before the Tigers hit back to draw level at the main break. The Sharks started the third term strongly with back-to-back goals through Tiani Teakle and Abbey Amaranti, before the Tigers responded through Mhicca Carter and the deficit was just six points at the final break. Though challenged, the cream rose to the top in the final term as Julia Teakle, Georgie Cleaver and Larissa Versaci all slotted goals in the final term to win, 7.6 (48) to 3.4 (22).

Ashlee Atkins picked up a game-high 20 disposals, as well as five marks, four tackles and six inside 50s, working well through the middle alongside the likes of Ashleigh Gomes and Sharon Wong who both recorded 11 disposals apiece. Laura Catherine was incredible in he ruck with 34 hitouts for eight touches, three marks and two tackles, whilst Julia Teakle booted 1.3 from nine disposals and four marks as a target up forward. Jasmin Stewart again stood out for the Tigers picking up 17 disposals, seven marks, three tackles and two inside 50s. Katherine Orme (16 disposals, three marks, three inside 50s and a goal) was also impressive, with Mikayla Western, Sarah Viney and Brooke Whyte also impressive.

East Fremantle hosts Peel Thunder next Saturday at the WACA, whilst Claremont travels to Steel Blue Oval on the same day to lock horns with Swan Districts.

An outstanding four-goal haul from Maggie Maclachlan who was swung forward against South Fremantle has seen Subiaco come away with the 47-point win. The Lions lost to the Bulldogs just a few weeks prior, but remarkable performance of 21 disposals, four inside 50s and 4.3 from Maclachlan guided the home side to victory. They dominated possession with 86 more disposals and 26 more inside 50s, as their usual suspects controlled the ball. Keeping the Bulldogs goalless in the first half, the Lions only lead by 14 points, but a three-goal final term from the Fremantle-listed Maclachlan as part of a five goal to nil quarter resulted in the Lions running away with the contest.

Tarnica Golisano was sensational to win a round-high 29 disposals, as well as two marks, five tackles and six inside 50s, whilst Abbey Dowrick (27 disposals, five marks, eight tackles and six inside 50s) and Jayme Harken (25 disposals, four inside 50s) also racked up plenty of the pill. Madizen Wilkins and Helen Taylor were also among the best for the winners. South Fremantle young gun Molly O’Hehir had a massive day out, recording 24 disposals for the Bulldogs to be the clear ball-winner on her side, whilst fellow teenager Lauren Wakfer (14 disposals, 20 hitouts) returned to the WAFL Women’s in style. Captain Lauren Vecchio and Poppy Stockwell also had important moments in the match.

Subiaco has the bye in Round 12, whilst South Fremantle travel to Pentanet Stadium to face West Perth for the third time this season.

Swan Districts grabbed third spot on the WAFL Women’s ladder with a 53-point win over last placed West Perth. Controlling the game and winning each of the four quarters, the Swans piled on four goals in the first term and seven by the main break to open up a 34-point advantage at half-time. The second half was far tighter, with West Perth putting up a fight, but the Swans still kicked three goals to one to secure the 10.8 (68) to 2.3 (15) victory.

Returning from the AFLW Under 18 Championships, several young guns made immediate impacts on the game, with Jaime Henry (28 disposals, two marks, five tackles and seven inside 50s), Abbygail Bushby (26 disposals, two marks, three tackles and six inside 50s) and Tyla Fitzgerald (18 disposals, three tackles, six inside 50s and 1.4) all starring. Jorgina Kean stood tall on debut with 16 disposals, three marks, three tackles, four inside 50s and a goal, whilst captain Jessica Cox (22 disposals, five tackles and three inside 50s) lead from the front. In front of goal, Courtney Zappara and Ashley Sharp booted two goals apiece.

For West Perth, Jessica Roper had another big game picking up 22 disposals, three marks and four tackles, with the returning state representative Kayla Van Den Heever recording 15 disposals, two tackles and two inside 50s. Megan Norbury (14 disposals, six marks, three tackles and two inside 50s) was once again lively, whilst Jeevna Heer and Karla Stagg also had their fair share of the ball.

Swan Districts welcomes Claremont to Steel Blue Oval next Saturday, with West Perth hosting South Fremantle at Pentanet Stadium the following day.
