SNAPSHOT: “A strong marking forward with a high endurance base that enables her to work up the ground and make an impact.”

Sienna Sharp captained the Sandringham Dragons in 2025 and had moments where it was clear she had a few more layers to her than just being a marking specialist. Working up the ground at times, Sharp’s ability to find the ball outside 50 was very impressive, and she even had a 30-plus disposal game at one stage.

Sharp comes from a soccer background before transferring to Aussie rules to join her brother at Ormond. She played 56 games across her first three seasons, including for both a girls side and mixed team through 2019. By 2022, Sharp was in the Under 16s and representing the South Metro Junior Football League (SMJFL) at interleague which lead to her selection for Sandringham Dragons and Vic Metro Under 16s.

She made the move to East Brighton in the same 2023 season, booting 10 goals in 14 games, while earlier making her debut for Sandringham Dragons in the additional wildcard fixture against Western Jets. A couple of Under 16s Futures matches for the Dragons showed enough for Sharp to make the Metro team, kicking a goal against Vic Country, and also playing in the loss to South Australia.

The following year, Sharp became more established in the Dragons’ lineup, booting four goals from eight games, but also spending time up both ends. She only averaged 4.9 disposals and 2.1 hitouts, but her size and endurance base were among the traits that helped her earn a spot in Vic Metro’s summer hub ahead of the 2025 season.

Sharp lifted her output astronomically this year, managing 15.5 disposals, 4.1 marks, 2.5 tackles and 2.1 inside 50s, while kicking 11 goals from 13 games for Sandringham. She played all four national championships matches and had 7.5 disposals and 2.0 inside 50s, and though having to share the forward half with a stack of talent, still ahd her moments throughout the carnival.

In the end, Sharp showed enough to earn a State Draft Combine invite where she was able to impress through the 2km time trial. While still having plenty of improvements to come, the Geelong supporter left nothing out on the park in her pursuit of achieving her dream.

STRENGTHS:

+ Marking
+ Penetrating kick
+ Endurance
+ Strength
+ Footy IQ

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Athleticism
- Groundballs

Sharp wasted no time showing off her work rate at the AFLW State Draft Combine with an impressive 7:47 in the 2km time trial, to rank second of those at the State Draft Combine, and in the top 10 overall. Given her height of 177cm, Sharp's endurance base is a huge tick in her favour, and shows that pinch-hitting in the ruck or roaming around the ground will rarely ever be a problem.

Quite often the tall forward will work up to half-back to be a marking target from a defensive 50 exit, and while most of her impact is in the air, she gets involved in transition and is usually a lovely kick of the football. Both in penetration and accuracy, Sharp has nice football IQ then enables her to find the loose target or at least kick to a 50/50 contest downfield.

In many ways, being able to have multiple Sharps across the field would be perfect considering her strong overhead ability and knack for using her frame to full advantage. Few players - even senior ones - will struggle to outmark her because of her safe hands, and she averaged 4.1 marks per match for the Dragons at Coates Talent League Girls level this season.

Despite her obvious strength in the air, Sharp actually won the bulk of her touches in an uncontested manner, simply because she knew where to run to find it, and usually either marked in space, or worked into the open then drove the ball forward.

Having played across all three lines and in just about every position, Sharp's versatility is another tick in her favour. She can adapt and play a key role wherever is required, and her control of her area both in the air and at ground level helps with that.

However at 177cm and a strong frame, Sharp does have her athletic deficiencies and is still developing her groundball-winning consistency. She has the strength to outmuscle opponents, but once the ball hits the deck, the advantage goes to the opposition. That lack of speed or agility is something that is always a question mark on the taller players, and even with her groundball-winning improving, there is that element or not being able to break away, so rather just breaking tackles and firing into the clear or to a free option.

Sharp is best suited to be that workhorse around the ground who can be a key marking target and then use her penetrating kick to find players downfield. That is her bread and butter, and where if playing as a forward, she can be quite damaging. The athletic deficiencies are going to be the key question mark, but it will come down to what role clubs can see Sharp filling, and as Dragons' skipper, clearly the tall has natural leadership instincts too which is a huge tick.

DRAFT RANGE: Late

SUMMARY:

Sienna Sharp has earned a State Draft Combine invite off a strong campaign with Sandringham this year, showing marked improvement on 2024. While there are improvements to come in her game, Sharp’s endurance and strength really stand out.
