2024 AFL National Futures squad announced

THE AFL has today released a squad of 46 players set to participate in this year’s National Futures program. All players selected are of the current Under 17 category (2007-born) and will be eligible for the 2025 AFL National Draft. Every state and territory is represented in the squad.

Those who were selected – by respective state programs, national selectors, and AFL club recruiters – will convene for a three-day camp in Melbourne later this month. The program culminates in the annual curtain-raiser match on AFL Grand Final day, at the MCG on Saturday September 28.

The fixture is somewhat of an audition in the selection process for next year’s National AFL Academy. A total of 19 Under 16 All-Australians from 2023 have been named in the squad, including Zeke Uwland, who was the only bottom-ager to earn Under 18 All-Australian honours this year.

Along with Uwland, the likes of Willem Duursma and Dyson Sharp are considered to be leading prospects in next year’s crop. Duursma has three siblings currently at AFL or AFLW clubs, while West Australian tall Cody Curtin is the brother of 2023 Adelaide draftee, Daniel.

Over a third of the squad is club-tied, spanning talent out of Northern and Next Generation Academies, and those who come under father-son eligibility. One intriguing prospect who comes under multiple rulings is Gold Coast Suns Academy and Melbourne father-son hopeful, Kalani White.

2023 Under 16 Pool A champions, and 2024 Under 18 title winners Vic Metro boast a high of 10 representatives in the squad. South Australia and Western Australia are the next best with seven, while Queensland, NSW/ACT, and Vic Country all have six. Tasmania and the NT have two apiece.

The overall squad will shortly be split into two teams, named after retiring champions Dyson Heppell and Rory Sloane. The game will be broadcast live and free via the AFL app and website, with profiles and scouting notes on every player afield to come on Rookie Me Central – stay tuned.
