A 50-STRONG squad to represent the VFL Women’s competition was announced today ahead of the leagues clash with the SANFL Women’s State Team at Alberton Oval on Friday, April 11. Now just two weeks away, the final team of 21 players will be announced prior to the match.

The battle for state rivalry will mark the competition’s inaugural representative match, and was named during AFL’s Gather Round to maximise attendance for the prestigious clash. North Melbourne VFLW premiership coach Brett Gourley will take the reins as head coach, with all 12 clubs represented in the squad.

The squad features 13 Team of the Year members last year, and just under 30 players who have been on an AFLW list at some point in their career. However currently listed AFLW players are ineligible to be selected for the team.

Working under Gourley, the VFLW State Team coaching panel also features AFLW premiership forward and Collingwood VFLW assistant Sarah Perkins, Box Hill Hawks specialist coach and former North Melbourne VFLW coach Steph Binder, Casey Demons assistant Dee Longwill and Collingwood VFLW coach Tom Cashin.

Collingwood and North Melbourne boasts 38 per cent of the squad with a remarkable 19 representatives between them. The next most is Port Melbourne and Essendon with five apiece, while Casey Demons and Darebin Falcons (four each) are also well represented. Western Bulldogs and Box Hill each have three, with Carlton, Sandringham and Williamstown (two) and Geelong having just one.
