SOUTHPORT has locked in another minor premiership despite a gallant effort from first-year side Broadbeach in Round 15 of the QAFL Women’s competition. The Sharks remained four points clear of Coorparoo, but given almost 200 per cent separates the sides, the week off is locked in. Aspley also gave itself a mathematical chance in theory with a win over Wilston Grange, but the 80 per cent differential between the two sides means the top five is all but set.

Southport 4.5 (29) def. Broadbeach 3.2 (20)

Southport secured a hard-fought nine-point win over Broadbeach at Fankhauser Reserve to maintain its stranglehold on top spot heading into the final round. The Sharks were made to work for it by a determined Cats outfit, but ultimately had enough class to get over the line and extend their lead at the top of the ladder.

Ella Maurer was the standout for Southport, amassing 28 disposals, seven clearances and two inside 50s. Rianna Schipp (26 disposals, three marks and two clearances) and Kiara Hillier (17 disposals, nine marks and six tackles) were also influential, while Tayla Christensen kicked two goals. Sienna Burnham was busy through the midfield with six clearances, and Giselle Davies provided 15 hitouts from the ruck.

For Broadbeach, Stephanie Aguinaldo was tireless with 17 disposals, four clearances and nine tackles. Makayla Sekac (14 disposals, two marks and five clearances) and Drew Barnes (17 disposals and four marks) also worked hard in defeat, while Molly Ritson kicked two goals.

Wilston Grange 6.4 (40) def. by Aspley 7.6 (48)

In the upset of the round, Aspley produced a gutsy performance to defeat Wilston Grange by eight points at Hickey Park, at least keeping the possibility of mathematical – though essentially impossible – finals alive. The Hornets trailed at various stages but showed great resilience to run over the top of the Gorillas in the second half.

Eva Downie was exceptional for Aspley, finishing with a massive 34 disposals, five marks, one clearance, five tackles and nine inside 50s. Ella Smith (32 disposals, two marks, four clearances, seven tackles and seven inside 50s) was equally dominant, while Niamh McCarthy (19 disposals, two marks, two clearances and six inside 50s) and Maddison Tallis (12 disposals, three inside 50s and two goals) also made important contributions.

For Wilston Grange, Layla Collins was enormous, gathering 24 disposals, nine clearances and 18 tackles. Mackenzie Findlay (23 disposals, five marks and four clearances) and Hayley Finning (21 disposals and five marks) were also busy, while Summer Hamilton kicked two goals and Naomi Celebre added two more.

Bond University 11.15 (81) def. Moreton Bay 1.1 (7)

Bond University bounced back emphatically from last week’s narrow defeat to Coorparoo, demolishing bottom-placed Moreton Bay by 74 points at Bond University Oval. The Bull Sharks were relentless, piling on 11 goals to one in a percentage-boosting performance that keeps them firmly in the top three.

Shannon Nolan was outstanding for Bond University, racking up 32 disposals, four marks, nine clearances, four tackles and seven inside 50s, adding two goals to her tally. Kendra Blattman was the main beneficiary up forward, booting four goals from four marks, while Tegan Williams (24 disposals, four marks, four clearances and four inside 50s) and Millar Brosnan-Ball (21 disposals, nine marks, five inside 50s and two goals) were also prominent. Skye White dominated the ruck with 27 hitouts.

For Moreton Bay, Jessica Davy battled hard with 25 disposals, four marks, four clearances and 10 tackles. Indiana Marshall (13 disposals, five marks, five clearances and three inside 50s) kicked the Lions’ only goal.

University of Queensland 3.3 (21) def. by Coorparoo 4.8 (32)

Coorparoo continued its strong form with an 11-point win over the University of Queensland at Base Architecture Meadows, keeping the Kings in second place on the ladder. The Kings were tested by a spirited UQ outfit but had enough class to hold on and secure a crucial victory.

Ayla Fetahagic led the way for Coorparoo with 26 disposals, four marks, seven clearances, seven tackles and six inside 50s. Dakota Villiva (19 disposals, five marks, four clearances, five tackles, six inside 50s and a goal) and Grace Roberts-White (19 disposals, four marks, three clearances, 15 tackles and a goal) were also vital. Renee Teys was busy in the ruck with 37 hitouts.

For UQ, Luka Yoshida-Martin was brilliant in a losing side, finishing with 37 disposals, two marks, nine clearances and seven tackles. Tiana Anderson (25 disposals, four marks, one clearance and two tackles) and Freya Ross (17 disposals, five clearances and 17 tackles) also worked tirelessly, while Sophie Dunne kicked two goals.

Maroochydore 2.6 (18) def. by Morningside 6.2 (38)

Morningside rounded out a strong week for the Panthers with a comfortable 20-point win over Maroochydore at Neil Upton Oval, keeping them in the hunt for a top-five finish heading into the final round. The Panthers were too strong for the struggling Roos, who remain in ninth place.

Stella Scott was again the Panthers’ best, finishing with 28 disposals, seven marks, four clearances, four tackles and four inside 50s. Isabella Levine (21 disposals, seven clearances and five tackles) and Zoe Petrides (21 disposals and four marks) were also prolific, while Renee Taylor kicked two goals. Georgia Lwin also booted two majors from the ruck, where she finished with eight hitouts.

For Maroochydore, Molly Ferguson was the standout with 31 disposals, five marks, three clearances and four tackles. Kya Wills-Rawlings (24 disposals, five marks, three clearances and seven tackles) and Ameleia Murray (20 disposals, two marks, four clearances and a goal) also tried hard in defeat.
