SNAPSHOT:

Ava Campbell is a widely respected leader and general in defence, having captained the Eastern Ranges into the 2023 Coates Talent League Girls Grand Final. Her strengths lie in that leadership, as well as her competitiveness and aerial ability, with the Vic Metro defender remaining a draft chance after a strong finish to the season.

STRENGTHS:

+ Intercepting
+ Reading the play
+ Leadership
+ Aerial ability
+ Competitiveness
+ Penetrating kick

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Composure
- Ground level work
- Athleticism

PROFILE:

When it comes to assessing all areas of a potential draftee's life, clubs will not have to dig too deep to find glowing reviews of Campbell on and off the field. A natural leader who has been amongst the Eastern Ranges' leaders for some time, the top-ager captained the side throughout the season as they won the minor premiership, and reached the grand final.

On the field, her aerial ability - in particular her intercept marking - is what stands out. She knows where to be and positions herself to be able to either mark the ball or come across with a timely spoil. From an organisational perspective, Campbell sees the game well and is able to marshall the troops in defence with both her voice and hand gestures so her teammates are all on the same page.

Without a doubt, Campbell's competitiveness and sheer will to win makes her a natural leader. She can step up when it counts and take some big marks, or throw herself in the firing line to lock the ball up or apply a big tackle. With ball-in-hand, the Eastern Ranges defender can have a penetrating kick and look to clear the danger quickly, or mop up with a quick release handball and immediate shepherd.

That element of her game is consistent, and the next step to round out her defensive game is having that additional composure at times to assess the options, particularly when disposing of it by foot quickly out of defence. With opposition teams setting up so well behind the ball, defenders are finding it harder and harder to 'dump kick' to safety without the ball coming back into the defensive 50.

Along with her composure, Campbell could also improve her athletic elements, which is an area she identified in the preseason as a work in progress. More of a natural footballer than an athlete, Campbell competes hard, and is strong in the air, but once the ball hits the deck, can be hampered in a foot race. Continuing to build that speed and endurance will allow her to improve her ground level game and win more contests after the initial marking one.

For those areas of improvements, Campbell is a player whose floor within games is quite solid. Even if she is not winning a lot of the ball, she will always provide four quarter effort and the intangibles including leadership and competitiveness that cannot just be taught easily within a football program. Those areas come naturally to Campbell, which is why she remains in the draft frame.

Campbell has a strong defensive game with a number of tools from which a club can build upon and work with going forward. While there might be flashier and more athletic prospects out there, the Eastern Ranges skipper is essentially outstanding in the traits you can't teach, and has enough natural football nous that she will never stop in her desire to get better.

SUMMARY:

Ava Campbell has built a consistent junior career through the Eastern Ranges and Vic Metro programs. Strong in the air and competitive across the ground, she has put herself in contention to be drafted, and is among the players who will likely come under consideration later on in the draft.
