Summary
SNAPSHOT: “A dangerous medium forward who can win matches off her own boot thanks to her elite forward craft and goal sense when inside 50.”
Georgia Knight has long been regarded as one of the most reliable goalscorers in the Coates Talent League Girls competition. In her third season with the Eastern Ranges – and second full year at the club, Knight has been amongst the leading goalkickers both years with her sheer volume of goals she has kicked, as well as set others up.
Knight came through the Eastern Region Female Football League with Monbulk, while playing school footy at Rowville Secondary College. She kicked 21 goals in 16 games in 2019, before returning from the Covid layoff to slam home 36 in nine games through the Outer East competition for the Under 17s Monbulk side. She would cach the eye at the interleague competition as well, and was therefore scouted into the Eastern Ranges program.
A move to Vermont in 2022 yielded some change for Knight, who got her first taste of Coates Talent League Girls action. She kicked three goals on debut and then would return late in the season, getting a final in and kicking eight goals from four games in the Under 18s side. She also represented Vic Metro at the AFLW Under 16 Girls Championships, kicking a goal in the second of two matches.
Back in the Eastern Football League in 2023, Knight was limited to three games – kicking six goals for Emerald/Monbulk, as she played out a full season for the Eastern Ranges. In her 16 games, she slotted 21 goals including two hauls of four – against Tasmania Devils in Round 5 and Oakleigh Chargers in Round 17.
Somewhat surprisingly despite her efforts, Knight was excluded from the Vic Metro Summer hub, instead having to work her way back into draft contention. An impressive 27-goal season from 16 games saw her finish second overall – to Ava Read – in the leading goalkicking stakes, while earning her place for Vic Metro.
She slotted a game-high five goals against Vic Country at Marvel Stadium to remind everyone of her talent, and finished the carnival with nine for the series. That earned the Vic Metro forward All-Australian honours, and ultimately a National AFLW Draft Combine invite, while playing in another Coates Talent League Girls Grand Final.
PLAYER HIGHLIGHTS:
STRENGTHS:
+ Goal sense
+ Forward craft
+ Footy IQ
+ Marking
+ One-on-ones
+ Scoreboard impact
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Endurance
- Versatility
PROFILE:
Georgia Knight is undoubtedly one of the most talented and naturally gifted forwards in the AFLW Draft crop. The two main knocks on her game over the journey have been her endurance and versatility. By improving these areas, Knight has the potential to add more dimensions to her game and round out her overall profile.
Knight might be one of the most, if not the most daunting prospect under 170cm when the ball heads inside 50. Defenders in one-on-one situations get nervous against Knight because she can beat them in a variety of ways. Positionally she might be the pidgeonholed as a forward, but when in the role, her way of beating the opposition is varied.
Knight is strong one-on-one, a great aerial player, positions herself well and simply outsmarts the opposition. She is not afraid to engage in a wrestle, uses her frame well to nudge opponents under the ball, and also has the high level footy IQ to mark on the lead inside 50.
When it comes to marking the ball, Knight has plenty of tricks up her sleeve, but the best part about her game is when she does not mark it and instead brings the ball to ground, she is clean enough to swoop and snap quickly to score that way as well.
Previously her dominant right foot was a side she loved to get onto, but in 2024, her left side not only improved, but became another element that hurt opponents. She no longer just tried to swing onto her right, but was comfortable slotting them on her left, such as her brilliant first goal against Vic Country at Marvel Stadium from the boundary.
Her forward craft is off the charts, and as soon as the ball hits the deck, she will be on the scene to do damage. With her set shots, she is usually reliable, and though in the Coates Talent League Girls Grand Final she missed one she would normally gobble up, over the course of her junior career, she has nailed far more than she has missed, so coaches and fans can rely on her to consistently put the ball through the big sticks.
On sheer numbers alone, Knight leaves a lot of players in her wake. Her goalkicking feats are well recognised, and her highlights package is one that you could watch all day. The way she can convert goals in all manner of ways make her a player that will impact the scoreboard in some way.
As mentioned earlier, the main knocks on her are her endurance and versatility. Right now her traits just lend themselves to being a pure inside 50 operator. She has the traits and smarts to play that role at the elite level, so there is no reason to think she cannot do that. However as has been shown over the years, adding more variety is key to sustained success, so Knight would be looking to knuckle down and build up her endurance to play further afield.
She did have the odd centre bounce stint for Eastern this year, but at the end of the day, she's an elite forward, so that is where she will play. Still, improving those areas will only make her better, and without a doubt she is a well loved teammate, bringing positive vibes and an energy to the forwardline that few players can naturally do. If she does get drafted, expect a lot of unique goal celebrations, because Knight is one of the best at conquering them up and involving teammates.
DRAFT RANGE: 30-60
SUMMARY:
The question for most pure goalscoring forwards will be whether or not being such an outstanding pure goalkicker is enough in the modern game. Georgia Knight is not just a mark-and-kick forward, she has additional layers and multiple ways to hurt opposition defenders, which is why she deservedly earned an AFLW National Draft Combine. While she does need to expand her game in the future, she is naturally gifted and is in the mix for the second half of the draft.
