SNAPSHOT: “One of the more athletically gifted players, Baba overcame injury issues to display the traits that earned her a place in the AFLW Academy and Vic Metro squads.”

Grace Baba is an athletic and gifted player who has spent less time at the sub-elite junior level than most, but has caught the eye with her fantastic vertical jump and speed off the half-back line. While still developing some of her fundamental traits, Baba’s foundational base from which to work from for a future club is fantastic.

Starting her journey in Year 8, Baba could not have picked a worse time to try and get into a new sport, with the global pandemic essentially putting her hopes on hold for two years. Prior to that she had played a mix of soccer and hockey growing up, but followed her friends into Aussie rules. Though the two-year hiatus might have been a steep learning curve, Baba did not lose the faith that she would join the sport.

Initially invited to play at Eastern as a double bottom-ager, but encouraged to focus on school, Baba got her second chance a season later ahead of her 17th year. She came in as a bottom-ager and lit up the games, providing some flair and dash from defence, matching up on some quality opponents and holding her own.

Despite not making the Vic Metro side, Baba would be included for the Summer hub, and impressively get invited to the AFLW Academy where she would be able to run out alongside the best in the country at IKON Park this year.

Her top-age year would not be without its lows though, with injury forcing Baba on the sidelines for an extended period of time. She would miss the first two Vic Metro games, but returned to face South Australia in what was ultimately the crowning moment of the national carnival for the ‘Big V’. After that, Baba finished the year in Ranges colours, reaching another Coates Talent League Girls grand final.

Her National Academy status, along with her evident upside and natural talent earned her an AFLW National Draft Combine invite where she lit up the vertical jumps in particular. Coming into the year, Baba set her sights on reaching the Top 20, and based on what she has shown, she will not be too far away from that.

PLAYER HIGHLIGHTS:

STRENGTHS:

+ Athleticism
+ Aerial ability
+ Aggression
+ Vision
+ Ground level work
+ Upside

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Decision making
- Timing of marks
- Four-quarter effort

PROFILE:

Grace Baba's athletic profile combined with her aggressive nature sets her aside from many other prospects. She naturally has a huge leap that helps her take intercept marks, is quick once at ground level, and has a fierce determination to apply plenty of defensive pressure to her opponents.

While her timing of marks can certainly improve - quite often she will fly too early and get under the ball - if she gets it right she can take the ball at the highest point which is quite rare for a lot of her peers. She takes it cleanly once able to get her hands on it, and is competitive at ground level.

Her competitive nature and defensive pressure are other key talking points in her profile. She can be overzealous at times and give away free kicks, but she is so driven to bring the opponent to ground and win the ball back. However, there have been a number of times where late in games with the result known, her motivation has noticeably dropped off.

Ensuring her fantastic defensive mindset and aggressive nature is consistent throughout four quarters is a key next step to becoming a more complete player and will be one that clubs have identified as an improvement area.

Looking at her skillset, Baba is a nice long kick that is more often than not technically sound. She does need to work more on her opposite side as well as her decision making, but her technique, particularly when given the freedom to run and carry, works for her.

Baba ran at 61.3 per cent efficiency by foot in the Coates Talent League Girls competition, while winning 41.7 per cent of her possessions at ground level. For an aerial specialist, that number is quite high which shows her capability at ground level.

Finally, the more intrinsic value in selecting Baba comes in what many believe to be a high ceiling. Her evident upside is drawn from her size, athleticism and natural traits that can only improve. If she can fulfil her potential at the elite level then she could provide a fantastic highlights tape in the future.

DRAFT RANGE: 20-40

SUMMARY:

Grace Baba is a player with potential and a nice foundational base for a club to build upon in the future. She is in the second round range, with the potential to sneak into the top 20, or drift a little depending on club needs. Either way, she is one to watch in the coming years.
