SNAPSHOT: “One of the strongest midfielders in the AFLW Draft crop with clean hands and great defensive pressure.”

Isla Wiencke has been the leading Canberra prospect throughout this year’s AFLW Draft, with the Giants Academy member plying her trade through the nation’s capital and earning plenty of accolades along the way. The Allies representative and National Academy member looms as a potential late value selection, with some handy stoppage traits and no shortage of power.

Wiencke is a Belconnen Magpies junior, starting way back in 2017 when she played in the Under 12 Girls as a 10-year-old. In her second season, she played across the Under 12s, 15s, and even 11s mixed side, with her age group and gender competition yielding the most of 15 games for eight goals and among the best eight times.

By 2019, she was now a top-ager in the competition and fluently impressing, and while many in 2020 were out of action, Wiencke was piling on 20 goals in eight games for the 14s side. She continued to don the black and white throughout her junior career, slamming home 36 goals across 17 games in 2021 including 26 from 10 in the 14s side, further illustrating her burgeoning talent.

The year of 2022 is where Wiencke began her representative journey, donning the orange and charcoal at the National Development Championships as a bottom-ager, while making her debut in the Rising Stars competition alongside her 16s league where her side went down in the grand final of that year. Another Under 16s national campaign in 2023 was followed by eight goals across six games in the Rising Stars competition, named among the best in every game.

At the same time, Wiencke made her First Grade debut and not only held her own, but excelled, booting 10 goals in 13 games and named among the best nine times, already indicating she had the size and strength to compete against senior opponents.

Her 2024 season is where her career took off. Wiencke booted 24 goals in 12 games for the senior side, including hauls of six and five against the Gungahlin Jets, and another three bags of three throughout the season. Wiencke averaged 23.0 disposals, 3.0 marks, 3.7 tackles and a ridiculous 9.8 inside 50s for the Giants Academy, while booting an average of a goal-per-game in the Coates Talent League, and made her Allies debut.

She has since played across both bottom and top-age national carnivals and averaged 16.4 disposals, 2.1 marks, 5.9 tackles and 3.9 clearances from her seven games, while being a stoppage force for the Giants in 2025. Her bottom-age season was statistically huge and gained the Giants Academy member a spot in the National Academy.

STRENGTHS:

+ Strength
+ Contested work
+ Stoppage craft
+ Clean hands
+ Defensive pressure
+ Penetrating kick
+ Scoreboard impact

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Kicking efficiency
- Speed
- Athleticism

An inside beast who can dictate the stoppages with the way she goes about her game, Wiencke has carved a career in winning clearances and laying bone-crunching tackles. While not athletic, Wiencke's point of difference is her ability to play forward and kick a lot of goals with a penetrating right boot that can be deadly within range of the big sticks.

Wiencke's sheer strength is hard to match for senior opponents let alone peers of her own age, and the amount of times a player will have the ball at ground level, and the Giants Academy member will waltz in, extract the ball and waltz back out is simply stunning. She has the means to physically control the game at the first point, and then either deliver by hand or thump the ball forward to put pressure on the defence.

Wiencke's inside game is where she flourishes, with her clean hands and stoppage craft going hand-in-hand enabling her to rack up some big numbers. Her penetrating kick and comfortability in rolling forward to be a marking target around the 50-metre arc is also another tick. Though she is likely to be a pure midfielder throughout her career who can rotate forward when needed, having that string is a huge benefit.

Her kicking - while penetrative - can definitely improve in terms of its efficiency. But it comes down to whether or not clearing the ball 40-odd metres or getting it out of the coalface even if it goes to the opposition, is efficient. Wiencke has no problems extracting it and putting the ball right down the ground, it is more just refining it or particularly over short or medium distances. Her raking boot has been such a value play that she has the power behind it, but just needs the finesse.

However the main knock on Wiencke's game is her athletic profile. Her speed, agility and athleticism can all improve, and is the tradeoff from being one of - if not the strongest - players in the draft crop. In terms of size - given WIencke is 'only' 174cm rather than a 180cm-plus tall - she would routinely dispossess well-built key position players such is her elite strength.

With most draft prospects it might be tricky to identify their future role or where their strengths can help an AFLW club. For Wiencke it is simple, put her in the centre bounce and let her go to work. If the Giants - or any club - have the need for a clearance beast who will pose all sorts of issues for the opposition, then Wiencke is the perfect fit. She won't be exploding out of the stoppage, but shrugging tackles or ragdolling opponents is all part and package of what she offers.

Highly regarded in the nation's capital with terrific character, Wiencke has a clear offering for recruiters, and if she fills that exact need - not to mention the smarts around goal when forward - then she is a unique selection for any club.

DRAFT RANGE: Late

SUMMARY:

While athleticism is always going to play a part in club decisions for players and Isla Wiencke definitely needs to improve that side of her profile, her footballing nous – particularly around the stoppages or inside 50 – is more than good enough to compete at the next level. If given the chance, she will pose quite a few problems for opposition midfielders with her size and strength.
