SNAPSHOT: “A competitive onballer who thrives on the inside with a high running capacity and elite defensive pressure, while being able to go forward and impact the scoreboard.”

Maggie Mahony is one of the more competitive and consistent players running around and will stop at nothing to achieve her dream of reaching the top level. A mad Collingwood fan who was at the 2023 AFL Grand Final, Mahony is a rock solid choice at this year’s AFLW Draft, and while there are areas for her to polish up, she is fully focused on becoming the best possible player she can be.

Mahony’s football journey started at a young age when the talented small started in Under 8s following her friends into the sport. She was the sole girl in an otherwise all-boys side, and loved it so much she signed up with Glen Iris Gladiators. She stayed there until Under 16s level, and was scooped up by Oakleigh where she has spent the past three seasons running out for the Chargers, winning two flags in that time.

Since playing six games as a double bottom-ager, Mahony has added a further 24 more in the past two seasons, and that was even after a broken collarbone mid-season threatened to derail her top-age year. Luckily the tenacious talent got back to play in the preliminary final and picked up where she left off. A week later, Mahony became a dual premiership player, making up for the fact she had missed the title-winning national carnival game against South Australia.

Though she did miss the Croweaters’ showdown, Mahony was still very much involved with teammates encouraging her to get in the team photo, sling and all. It showed a great level of appreciation that those around her had for her efforts even when on the sidelines. Across her two games, Mahony averaged 17.5 disposals, 6.5 tackles and 3.5 clearances, providing a hardness on the inside and point of difference to a number of other midfielders.

At Coates Talent League Girls level, Mahony racked up 26.0 disposals, 2.6 marks, 4.4 inside 50s and a ridiculous 7.9 tackles per game, while slotting six goals across 10 matches. She has maintained a disposal average of 22.1 and tackle average of 7.2 across her three seasons at the Chargers. Those areas are key in her week-to-week performances which are consistent as ever.

PROFILE:

You know exactly what you are going to get with Maggie Mahony. An uncompromising attack on the ball, high-level competitive nature and 100 per cent effort throughout four quarters rain, hail or shine. She is a lock to provide a role for her team, and her floor is higher than most. While others have traits that jump off the page, Mahony is one of those players who is just really good across the board.

Her nature as alluded to is focused and determined, which helps her win plenty of contested ball despite being a smaller midfielder. She punches above her size and is not afraid to get her hands dirty. Her clearance work is superb, and thanks to her dual-sidedness, Mahony can execute by foot on both sides of her body.

In terms of her skills, she can be a little hit and miss by foot at times, though when she is up and going she can put the ball into dangerous spots. She generally has great vision and knows what she wants to do, it is just about polishing up the final execution. However with time and space, Mahony can hit targets further afield both coming out of a stoppage and in space. The latter has a higher efficiency rate for the Chargers midfielder.

The big knock on Mahony is her speed. For a smaller player, she does lack that extra pace that a number of her peers have, but she has the endurance to work over opponents, with her contest-to-contest work and overall work rate fantastic. If clubs overlook that, then there is a fair bit that Mahony offers to a side in a variety of positions.

Though a natural midfielder who is so good on the inside, Mahony can play as a pressure forward, and pressure is what underpins her game. She will apply enormous amounts of defensive work - both through tackles and team-oriented efforts that maker her teammates better. Her ability to win groundballs and be clean by hand out of traffic is equally important, and she will wear bumps and still dispose of the ball well to a nearby teammate.

When given the chance up forward, Mahony can also hit the scoreboard, and set others up because her range of vision when kicking inside 50 after marking at half-forward is very good. She could well play that high half-forward role to great effect given her aerobic capacity and ability to get into ball-winning positions, but a club will likely have a role in mind for her.

DRAFT RANGE: 30-60

SUMMARY:

Maggie Mahony is a very reliable choice and a player who will leave no stone unturned in her bid to be the best footballer she can be. Naturally there are some question marks over elements such as her speed, but if clubs look to what she can offer – as she showed at state level for Collingwood’s VFLW side – then she will be a great fit for the team willing to take a chance on her.
