Gujarat back in the winners circle after Giant win

THE Gujarat Giants are back on the Women’s Premier League winners list in a big way, after they defeated the Delhi Capitals by 11 runs last night.

After the Giants posted 4/147 from their 20 overs, the Capitals could only muster 136 before they were bowled out with eight balls left in the innings.

After a shaky start in their opening over, Gujarat steadied and went on to record some solid partnerships, most notably the 81-run third wicket partnership between Laura Wolvaardt and Ash Gardner.

The pair combined for about two thirds of the entire team’s tally, which helped bolster them to the competitive total.

In the end, Wolvaardt made 57 while Gardner finished on 51 not out.

Meanwhile for Delhi, Jess Jonassen took two wickets, as Marizanne Kapp and Arundhati Reddy each took one.

Delhi made a productive start in response, but consistently lost cheap wickets in clumps.

Another factor that did not help the Capitals’ chances was the fact that only four players made double figure scores – Kapp, Reddy, Alice Capsey, and skipper Meg Lanning .

It was Kapp who top scored with 36, with Reddy the next best on 25.

Meanwhile for the victorious Giants, the wicket taking responsibilities were shared very evenly, with Gardner, Kim Garth and Tanuja Kanwar picking up two wickets apiece.

As the tournament starts to head into its back end and towards the finals, this result evens out the competition slightly. Delhi remains two games clear of the chasing pack, but Gujarat and third placed UP will both want to improve their run rates dramatically if they want any hope of catching the top two.
