Thunder Scorch rivals to Kappture star in inaugural WBBL Draft

SOUTH African star Marizanne Kapp made history on the weekend as the first ever number one pick in the WBBL Draft, after the Sydney Thunder were able to snatch her from the Perth Scorchers.

Already in a tough spot deciding who they were going to keep with their one retention pick, the Scorchers ultimately chose to retain Kiwi star Sophie Devine with the very next pick after the Renegades tried to pinch her.

The Renegades ultimately decided to go with someone they know, picking up West Indian Hayley Matthews.

Their cross town rivals the Stars liked that strategy so much they did the same thing, drafting Alice Capsey with pick four.

Some clubs went with the strategy of getting the band back together, while others took the opportunity to grab some extra talent.

Only the Thunder took the maximum three players, while others passing and leaving room on their lists for potentially signing one of the players available under the ‘direct nomination’ rule.

The six players – Tammy Beaumont, Sophia Dunkley, Amy Jones, Mignon du Preez, Lizelle Lee and Suzie Bates – opted to not nominate for the draft and instead nominate for this special category, which meant that they could bypass the draft and nominate with a club directly after the draft is concluded.
