2023/24 W International Series Preview: Australia vs West Indies
INTERNATIONAL cricket is back on Australian shores tomorrow, with the Australians set to welcome the West Indies to our shores.
It is the first time the two countries will have faced off in a series since September 2019. Back then, the Australians clean swept both the One Day International and T20 portion of the series, with many of the faces of that squad set to do battle again in this one.
For the Australians, their stability is something that has been a defining feature of their sustained success.
Alyssa Healy leads the green and gold once again as Meg Lanning is taking a break from international level. After sensationally missing the Ireland series a few months ago, Megan Schutt is back and will bring another level of pace to the Australian attack.
Someone else that is back is Ellyse Perry, who is back to the international level after picking up an injury at the back end of the Ashes. There will be a mid series squad change for the Australians, with Grace Harris only playing the T20s and Alana King only playing the One Day Internationals.
Meanwhile for the visiting West Indies, there is a very youthful tone to their squad.
The West Indies are floundering in world cricket at the moment, and so need to go through a bit of a rebuild. Four members of this touring party went to the Under 19 World Cup earlier this year, and now get their chance o shine at senior level – Ashmini Munisar, Jannillea Glasgow, Zaida James and Djenaba Joseph.
But with all that youth there needs to be some experienced heads, and the West Indies have that. The team is led by Hayley Matthews, who remarkably despite her level of international experience is still only 25, but she will have a very experienced head alongside her in Stafanie Taylor.
The series begins tomorrow in Sydney, before moving to Brisbane and then finally Melbourne.
