Russell rallies Windies to consolation win

THE West Indies have finished their Australian tour strongly, nabbing a 37-run consolation win in Perth last night. Andre Russell rallied after the tourists elected to bat first, blasting 71 (29) to dig his side out of deep holes at 3-17, and 5-79.

Russell combined with Sherfane Rutherford for the highest sixth-wicket partnership in T20I history, adding 139 off just 67 balls – including 84 in the final five overs. The latter remained unbeaten with 67 off 40 deliveries, while Roston Chase chimed in with a handy 37 (20) at number four.

Aussie T20I debutant Xavier Bartlett did the early damage with two wickets in the opening three overs, going on to claim 3-37. It was Adam Zampa (1-65) who Russell took a particular liking to, though, smashing the spinner for 28 runs off his final over.

The visitors ended up with 6-220 off a full 20 overs – their third consecutive score in excess of 200 in as many tries this series. They left their best effort for last, posting the highest-ever T20I total at Perth Stadium.

In response, Player of the Series David Warner led the way with 81 off 49 in his final international appearance on home soil. Though, he was the second to go in a mini-collapse of 3-3 which saw the required run rate skyrocket to over 15 per over.

Tim David (41 off 19) pitched in with a late cameo but it proved too little, too late for the hosts. Chase (2-19) put the clamps on across four terrific overs to restrict Australia to 5-183, well short of the imposing set total.

Unsurprisingly, Russell took out Player of the Match honours for his match-turning knock, while Warner’s nod for the series puts him in good stead for one final T20 World Cup in June. Australia won the tie 2-1 and will next tour New Zealand for three T20s and two Tests.
