PREVIEW | Australia vs India ODI Series

INTERNATIONAL cricket is back in Australia and back in the spotlight, as a three match one day series between two powerhouses of the women’s game gets underway in Brisbane today.

Australia and India will battle it out as both sides continue to build towards next year’s World Cup and to the culmination of the current ODI Championship cycle.

Both sides have already secured their place at next year’s tournament, but both are also still in the running to win the Championship. Australia are currently on top with 28 points, but India are only three points behind and have three more matches left than Australia does.

Looking ahead to this series, and although the Australian side is pretty consistent as it has been for a long time, there are some key personnel missing.

The biggest name of these is Alyssa Healy, with the skipper set to miss this series with injury, and Tahlia McGrath is set to take the captaincy duties in her place and Beth Mooney is set to take the keeper gloves. However, after some lean scores recently from Healy maybe this is a blessing in disguise.

Georgia Voll is coming into the squad to potentially make her debut, and with a spot open at the top of the order, it may be the perfect opportunity to show how good the depth of batting in this country is.

Speaking of lean form, India too is missing some big names.

Opener Shafali Verma is not making the trip down under, dropped after a poor World Cup and subsequent series against New Zealand, while wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia also will not be playing after injuring her wrist in the WBBL.

Regardless, the Indian batting line up is a daunting one, with Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues all capable of doing real damage with the bat.
