PREVIEW | New Zealand vs Australia – ODIs
AUSTRALIA’S last international series of 2024 gets underway tomorrow across the ditch, with the Aussie girls set to contest a three match one day series with neighbours New Zealand.
There is certainly plenty riding on this series, more so for the hosts than for the tourists.
With automatic qualification to next year’s World Cup always on the mind, the Kiwis have to do well in this series to make sure one of those automatic qualification spots is theirs. Currently they are sixth on the championship standings (top five plus hosts India gets automatic qualification and India is third on the table), but with Bangladesh a mere point behind them the New Zealanders need to bank as many points as they can in this series.
Both sides have their injury concerns heading into to this series.
For the hosts, Lea Tahuhu has been ruled out with a hamstring injury, and Georgia Plimmer has been ruled out with a bone stress reaction injury. This has given top order batter Bella James her maiden call up though.
However, the Kiwis do still have plenty of experienced heads who will be looking to fire on all cylinders, including the likes of Sophie Devine, Suzie Bates and Amelia Kerr.
For the Aussies, Sophie Molineux has been a late scratching for the series due to injury, and will be replaced by Heather Graham. Alyssa Healy has returned to the squad though after missing the India series through injury, but time will tell how many of the three matches she plays.
Graham has really struggled to lock in a spot in the Australian line up, so will be looking to really make the most of this opportunity. But with the likes of Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt and Annabel Sutherland to outshine for some game time, that might be a tall order.
