2021 Stats wrap: SSN Round 3 and ANZ Premiership Round 5

ROUND 3 of the Suncorp Super Netball 2021 season saw wins for the GIANTS, Collingwood Magpies, West Coast Fever and NSW Swifts. Across the ditch, the Round 4 ANZ Premiership winners were Southern Steel, Northern Stars and Mainland Tactix. We take a look at some of the standout performances and highest stats from the week.

Goals:

Fever goal shooter Jhaniele Fowler continues her reign the shooter with the most goals, maintaining 96.7 per cent accuracy with 59 goals this round. Sam Wallace from the Swifts was the most accurate of Round 3, not missing a single of her 48 shots, including two Super Shots. The GIANTS captain Jo Harten stepped back into goal shooter this week, and putting up 53 shots to sink 44 goals. She had the most Super Shot attempts with nine in all, but only three went in. Young gun goaler Sophie Dwyer, who is stepping in to Kiera Austin’s spot, had the highest Nissan Net Points of the GIANTS v Firebirds game, with 14 goal assists, four deflections, two gains and one intercept up the attacking end. Shimona Nelson also starred in the Magpies first win of the season, with 36 goals from 38 attempts, maintaining an accuracy of 94.7 per cent.

Grace Nweke continues to be a consistent reliable for the Mystics, sinking the most goals of the round with 59 from 63 attempts and maintaining an accuracy of 93.7 per cent. Nweke also tops the charts for rebounds with six in total, along with Tactix shooter Ellie Bird, who continues her recent fine form with 44 goals from 53 attempts. Steel’s George Fisher also managed 44 goals for the round. Maia Wilson from the Northern Stars was just behind with 43 goals, and Aliyah Dunn impressed by only missing one of her 40 shots, giving her the highest accuracy of the week with 97.5 percent.

Midcourt:

Magpies wing attack Kelsey Browne put on a solid performance for her side, getting the most goal assists for the round with 25 from 36 feeds in total. She was helped around the edge of the ring by Molly Jovic, who managed 17 goal assists, three gains, three deflections and one intercept. Fever’s Verity Charles was also a standout, with 24 goal assists from 25 feeds with an attempt. Allie Smith stepped up for the Vixens this week, playing three quarters in the centre bib to manage two gains and two deflections, while Firebirds wing defence Gabi Simpson put on quite a performance, collecting four gains, three deflections and two intercepts for the round.

Mila Reuelu-Buchanan was a standout for the Stars this week, with 26 goal assists from 44 feeds. Tactix wing attack Samon Nathan also worked hard, with 23 goal assists and 47 feeds into the circle. Also on 23 goal assists is wing attacks Shannon Saunders and Elisapeta Toeava, although Toeava also managed one intercept and one gain. Magic’s wing defence Georgie Edgecombe performed well this round as well, with three gains, two intercepts, and one deflection that resulted in a gain.

Defence:

The standout in the defence end during Round 3 was Magpies goal defender Jodi-Ann Ward, who picked up eight gains, five deflections, four intercepts and four rebounds. Sarah Klau also made quite an impact in the Swifts win, with seven gains, six defections two intercepts and two rebounds. Out of the front of Klau on the court was Maddy Turner, who managed to get six gains, four deflections, five rebounds and one intercept. Thunderbirds defender Matilda Garrett worked hard for her team, with five gains, four intercepts and two deflections, as well as Fever captain Courtney Bruce, with six gains and five intercepts.

Elle Temu shone for the Stars in goal defence during Round 5, collecting six gains, three intercepts and five deflections. Her defensive partner in Anna Harrison was also a standout, with three gains, two intercepts and two deflections. Erena Mikaere again demonstrated her impressive skills with four gains and six deflections, as well Pulse’s Kelera Nawai, who picked up four gains and two intercepts. Mystic’s goal keeper Sulu Fitzpatrick also played well, managing three gains and six deflections in total.
