A NEW year and a whole set of new international netball series to look forward to.
The first of these is the English Roses and Jamaican Sunshine Girls which is set to get underway next week, and in the second part of our previews for this series we take a look at the visitors Jamaica.
Now the 2022 calendar year was a bit of a breakthrough year for the Jamaicans, and one which they will no doubt look to build on heading into 2023.
The Commonwealth Games saw Jamaica record its best ever finish at either a Commonwealth Games or a World Cup, after earning a Silver Medal.
Jamaica actually finished top of its group and did not lose a game, but ultimately could not get over the top of the all conquering Australians in the Gold Medal Match.
2023 will be an interesting year for the Jamaicans as they try to really assert themselves as a dominant Netball nation, and a series against a side with the strength of England is a great way to start that.
This series begins preparations for what will culminate in the World Cup in the middle of this year.
Although the Jamaicans did not win the series last year, they will take confidence from the fact that they have only lost a series to the English twice.
Much of that Silver Medal winning Commonwealth Games squad will be fronting up for this series, but a few key stars will be missing.
The team will be led by shooting superstar Jhaniele Fowler, with deputy Shanice Beckford also playing this series.
Experienced defender Malysha Kelly makes a return to the side this series, but top defenders Shamera Sterling and Latanya Wilson and centre Adean Thomas will all be missing this series.
With Sterling, Wilson and Thomas all missing, this is the perfect opportunity for some others to stand up and really make their impact as the team begin to prepare for the World Cup in South Africa later this year.
