Fast5 glory for Ferns

IT was the Silver Ferns who once again held the Fast5 silverware aloft for the seventh time claiming victory in the dying seconds of the match.

In what was a close encounter New Zealand etched their way into history once again with a one goal win over Jamaica 34-33. The Sunshine Girls put up a strong fight coming home hard in the last quarter scoring 14 points, the most for the game. But it was not enough to upset the Ferns who impressed yet again on the Fast5 stage.

With the power-play behind them coming into the final quarter, Jamaica looked set to take home the title. But credit to the Ferns experience and skill they stayed calm and did the simple things well.

The shooting combo of Ameliaranne Ekenasio and Bailey Mes worked wonders for New Zealand throughout the series, firing once again in the gold medal match. Mes sunk 13 goals from 19 attempts going at 68 per cent while Ekenasio managed four from six. Mes was sitting at 100 per cent from the one point section and showed great versatility in the goal circle to swing the ball into a good scoring position.

While up the defensive end captain, Sulu Fitzpatrick was important in trying to nullify the impact of Jamaican shooting powerhouse Romelda Aiken who scored 16 from 21.  Along with Fitzpatrick, 25-year-old defender, Karin Burger also shone taking an impressive intercept and highlighting her ability to read the play.

New Zealand also unveiled pocket rocket Kimiora Poi who dominated in the centre position with her speed, agility and timing to feed into the circle all on display. She led the way for the Kiwis racking up 12 feeds and five goal assists while the next closest on the court was her partner in crime Whitney Souness.

The Jamaicans showed plenty of promise and put their stamp on the competition showing off young gun Shamera Sterling who has just recently signed with the Adelaide Thunderbirds in the Suncorp Super Netball League. Sterling dominated across the series and won a heap of ball back for her side in the gold medal match notching up one intercept, one deflection and one rebound.

Earlier that day New Zealand fell short to Jamaica by one goal only to return the favour in the gold medal match. The Ferns ability to learn from their mistakes and address those areas of concern proved to be the difference between the two sides with New Zealand once again claiming Fast5 bragging rights.
