2022 Australian Open Scoreboard: Day 4

IT was a day of upsets on the women’s side, and an Aussie wildcard led the charge on the men’s as the 2022 Australian Open Round of 64 was completed yesterday.

In the men’s draw, Australian wildcard Chris O’Connell was the talking point of the day, stunning 13th seed Diego Schwartzman in straight sets, 7-6 6-4 6-4. O’Connell joined fellow hope Alex de Minaur in the third round, whilst Nick Kyrgios fell short against world number two Daniil Medvedev, with the Russian winning in four sets. Elsewhere, Maxime Cressy continued his great form, with Andrey Rublev, Roberto Bautista Agut and Jannik Sinner among those players to race through to the Round of 32.

In the women’s draw, two top six seeds fell on day four, with third seed Garbine Muguruza and sixth seed Anett Kontaveit losing to Alize Cornet and Clara Tauson respectively. From an Australian perspective, the two out on court split results, with 10th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova proving too good for retiring Aussie Sam Stosur, whilst fellow wildcard Maddison Inglis won against American qualifier Hayley Baptiste. In other unseeded victories, Shuai Zhang won against an injured Elena Rybakina and Danka Kovinic upset US Open winner Emma Raducanu, whilst second seed Aryna Sabalenka survived a scare to win in three sets against Xinyu Wang.
