IT was a huge day at the Australian Open, with the first of the third round matches completed. The men’s matches went largely to plan, but there was one massive upset in the women’s draw.
For the men’s draw, two seeds fell at the expense of unseeded players. Frenchman Adrian Mannarino continued his remarkable run by knocking off last year’s semi-finalist Aslan Karatsev, whilst Miomir Kecmanovic booked a fourth round spot with victory over 25th seed Lorenzo Sonego. All bar two matches went beyond three sets, with only Alexander Zverev and Gael Monfils getting past their respective opponents. Other winners on the day were King of Clay Rafael Nadal, Matteo Berrettini, Denis Shapovalov and Pablo Carreno Busta.

Over on the women’s draw, the one massive upset was world number 60 Amanda Anisimova stunning reigning champion and 13th seed Naomi Osaka. The American young gun found her best form to defeat the Japanese star in three sets and set up a clash with world number one Ash Barty, who was a rare straight sets winner on the day. Fellow Grand Slam winner Victoria Azarenka also cruised through, whilst the other top eight seeds in Barbora Krejcikova, Maria Sakkari and Paula Badosa booked fourth round spots, as did American duo, Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys.
