ENTERING the second week of the 2022 Australian Open, the men’s and women’s had very different results on day eight. Whilst the men’s matches largely went to plan, there were three big upsets in the women’s, causing a real shake up in the bottom half of the draw.
The men’s fourth round produced some outstanding contests, with only 11th seed Italian Jannik Sinner escaping with a straight sets win over the last male Aussie hope, Alex de Minaur. Fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas had to fight back from two sets to one down against American Taylor Fritz to win in five, whilst second seed Daniil Medvedev beat the other remaining United States hope in Maxime Cressy. It means only seeds remain in the men’s draw, with ninth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime, Medvedev’s next opponent.

The women’s draw provided a number of stunning upsets to allow a potential first-time Grand Slam finalist. If it had not been for seventh seed Iga Swiatek‘s come-from-behind win over Romanian Sorana Cirstea, then there would have been a guaranteed first time finalist. She now takes on Estonian Kaia Kanepi in the quarter finals after Kanepi stunned Aryna Sabalenka in three sets, coming from behind to win an epic third set tiebreaker. In other upsets, Frenchwoman Alize Cornet kept her dream run going with a win over 14th seed Simona Halep, whilst 27th seed Danielle Collins completed the day of three-set contests, defeating 19th seed Elise Mertens.
