CINCINNATI’S women’s singles draw has been flung wide open with a trio of huge upsets in the National Bank Open’s Round of 16. All three top five seeds out on court – including the top two seeds – were dumped from the event, with world number one Iga Swiatek out in straight sets. She fell victim to home nation hope Madison Keys who won 6-3 6-4, while second seed Anett Kontaveit and fifth seed Ons Jabeur departed after three-set losses. China’s Shuai Zhang and Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova were the respective winners in those games, advancing to the third round of the WTA 1000 event.
Keys’ win over Swiatek snapped a five-game losing streak against world number ones, with the American winning nine games in a row to go from 2-3 down in the first set to 6-3 5-0 up, before Swiatek fought back a couple of breaks. Despite the Pole’s fight, she left her run a bit too late and the American advanced through to the quarter finals.
“It feels great. I obviously have not had the best success against World No. 1s, so being able to get a win against Iga, especially after having two losses to her already, means a lot to me, and I think I’m playing some pretty good tennis,” Keys said post-match.
Meanwhile in other results, seventh seed Jessica Pegula also won at home, defeating the red-hot Emma Raducanu. The 10th seed Raducanu had only dropped six games in four sets coming into the match, but was outclassed by Pegula, who ground out a 7-5 6-4 victory to move through to the final eight. Pegula joined Keys in the quarter finals, as their compatriots Shelby Rogers and Alison Riske-Amritraj both fell in the third round. Rogers lost out to sixth seed Aryna Sabalenka, while Riske-Amritraj fell to Elena Rybakina.
Pegula will next face Frenchwoman and qualifier Caroline Garcia, after Garcia defeated Elise Mertens in straight sets. Rounding out the eighth winner was Australian qualifier Ajla Tomljanovic who battled past Russian Veronika Kudermetova in three sets.
“I think she’s someone that no one really wants to play, because she hits the ball really hard, serves really well, super powerful,” Pegula said of Garcia post-match. “Has big groundstrokes and kind of takes the racquet out of your hands sometimes. Hard to play when you can’t get a rhythm. She’s really done well the last couple of months, which is nice to see, because obviously she was at the top of the game for a while too.”
“Yeah, tougher match than I think people will talk about or give credit to, but she’s been playing really well. It will be a tough match.”
Meanwhile in the men’s singles, it was largely predictable, with only two lower ranked players winning their Round of 16 matches. American Taylor Fritz knocked off sixth seed Andrey Rublev to dash an all-Russian quarter final to now take on top seed Daniil Medvedev. Fritz was joined in the quarter finals by compatriot John Isner who fought past wildcard Sebastian Korda despite a poor second set, while American young gun Ben Shelton‘s giant-killing run of Casper Ruud came to an end at the hands of Cameron Norrie, only winning two games as the British ninth seed cruised to victory.
Croatian Borna Coric continued his outstanding form following his win over second seed Rafael Nadal to cause more pain on Spain, knocking out 15th seed Roberto Bautista Agut, 6-2 6-3. He will take on Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime next, after the seventh seed fought back from a set down to defeat Italian Jannik Sinner, In other results, the third and fourth seeds in Carlos Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipas both won, and will face off against Norrie and Isner respectively in the quarter finals.
