Rookie Me Central’s Collaborative 2022 AFL Women’s Top 50 Countdown: #14 Kate Lutkins
IN a new exciting collaborative countdown, Rookie Me Central has teamed up with other independent media organisations to bring a 2022 AFL Women’s Top 50 Countdown. Every weekday from now until December 17, a new player will be named starting from 50th down to 1st, stemming from a combined eight Top 50 submissions. Among those who submitted Top 50s include Siren Sport‘s Gemma Bastiani, Women’s Australian Rules Football (WARF) Radio‘s Peter Holden, and a combined Outer Sanctum team’s Top 50.

An inaugural Lion, Lutkins has become one of the toughest, more reliable defenders in the league, albeit potentially still underrated by some.
Although she does not rack up the stats like many other defenders in the league, she is still one of the premier defenders in the league and it is what she can do off the ball that can scare opponents and fans alike. She is able to lockdown any opponent but also run off them and create opportunities offensively.
Lutkins won many awards in 2021, making it a year to remember. She was a member of Brisbane’s inaugural premiership side in 2021, and was named best on ground in that Grand Final win. Lutkins also earned her third All-Australian jacket, backing up her previous All-Australian honours in 2018 and 2020.
Lutkins has also been named in the Lions’ leadership group for the upcoming season, rewarding her continued leadership on and off the field..
In terms of this countdown, although people ranked her in a wide range of positions, she made everyone’s list. Some ranked her as high as fifth, while others had her down as low as 22nd. With most people ranking her in the mid-teens, Lutkins finds herself finishing in 14th in this countdown.
