Rookie Me Central’s Collaborative 2022 AFL Women’s Top 50 Countdown: #9 Chloe Molloy

IN a new exciting collaborative countdown, Rookie Me Central has teamed up with other independent media organisations to bring a 2022 AFL Women’s Top 50 Countdown. Every weekday from now until December 17, a new player will be named starting from 50th down to 1st, stemming from a combined eight Top 50 submissions. Among those who submitted Top 50s include Siren Sport‘s Gemma Bastiani, Women’s Australian Rules Football (WARF) Radio‘s Peter Holden, and a combined Outer Sanctum team’s Top 50.

Today we continue our countdown with number 9, Collingwood‘s Chloe Molloy

Chloe Molloy has been a star of the competition ever since she burst onto the scene in 2018.

Despite her obvious talent for Aussie Rules, many people might have forgotten Molloy spent the vast majority of her teenage years playing basketball, and only restarted playing Aussie rules in the few years before she was drafted.

She played much of her VFLW and TAC Cup (now known as NAB League) footy as a forward, but when she got to the Pies, she was moved to the defence.

She had an award-winning debut season, taking out the Rising Star Award and Collingwood’s Best and Fairest. She also made the All Australian side that year and was runner up in the League Best and Fairest.

She was unfortunately sidelined from the 2019 season due to an injury sustained at the end of the 2018 VFLW season, but since returning she has spent time at both ends of the ground.

She is a dangerous target for the Pies up forward. Much like Jaimee Lambert, she’s a quick player with a strong marking ability that can cause headaches for opponents and frustration for opposition fans alike.

She was prolific in front of goals in 2021, booting 16 goals in her 11 matches this season.

In terms of our countdown, everyone agreed Chloe Molloy was worthy of a spot in their top 50. Some ranked her as high as eighth, and others had her as low as 21st. With an average rank of 12th and a median rank of 9.5, she finds herself finishing in ninth in this countdown.

Siren Sport’s Gemma Bastiani ranked Molloy 18th overall and had this to say about her:

“Her reputation precedes her. (Molloy) kicked 16 goals in 2021 and goaled in all but two matches – both against Breanna Koenen.”
