THE Next Generation of Victoria’s AFL Women’s hopefuls will have the chance to showcase their skills with the opening round of the NAB League Girls season this weekend. Twelve of the 13 teams will return after a eight-month break, with the season brought ahead in-line with the AFL Women’s and state league competitions. Whilst the Western Jets have the bye in Round 1, the other 12 sides will take to the field across five different venues.
La Trobe University will play host to games on both Saturday and Sunday, with the GWV Rebels taking on Gippsland Power on Saturday, and reigning champions Oakleigh Chargers taking on Northern Knights on Sunday. The season opens on Saturday morning with Eastern Ranges clashing with Calder Cannons at Kilsyth Recreation Reserve, with the two other matches played in country regions.
The first match on the Apple Isle will see the Tasmania Devils launch their campaign against Sandringham Dragons at Prospect Park in Launceston, whilst Murray Bushrangers host Bendigo Pioneers on the border at Yarrawonga. The sole remaining game is down at Deakin University in Waurn Ponds on Sunday, with the Geelong Falcons hosting Dandenong Stingrays.
The Jets enter the competition in Round 2 when they travel down to Tasmania to take on the Devils. A double-header at Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve, with the Pioneers hosting the Rebels, and the Bushrangers taking on the Falcons. While the Eastern Ranges have the bye, the four remaining metropolitan sides face off with Calder hosting Northern and Sandringham taking on Oakleigh. Gippsland also clashes with Dandenong in the Power’s first home game of the year.
