AFLW 23 Under 23: #23 Cynthia Hamilton

OVER the next three weeks, Rookie Me Central will be counting down our 23 Players Under 23 years of age to watch in the upcoming 2023 season. The criteria is the player must be born in 2001 or later, and must have played at least one previous AFL Women’s match. As the list is completely subjective, the opinion is that of the individual author.

#23 Cynthia Hamilton (Sydney)

DOB: 02/04/2004
Height: 178cm
Position: Forward/Midfielder
Games: 9

Kicking off our countdown is a player about to enter her second season, having played seven games on debut coming into the inaugural Sydney Swans’ squad. Though a lot of the focus for the Swans’ draft crop was centred around number one pick Montana Ham, Hamilton showed she had plenty of upside and could match it with the stronger and more experienced opponents.

Hamilton has always been considered a talented junior, earning back-to-back All-Australians as a bottom-ager and then top-ager through the national carnival. The lifelong Swans fan was a member of the GIANTS Academy, but Sydney made Hamilton’s dream come true with one of its bevy of picks inside the top 10.

SEASON 7 KEY STATS:

Games: 9
Goals: 3
Disposals: 10.9
Disposal Efficiency: 69.4
Marks: 1.7
Clearances: 2.6
Tackles: 3.2
Inside 50s: 1.2
Time of Ground %: 86.2

Spending the majority of her time inside 50, Hamilton was able to show plenty of hardness and tricks despite only kicking the three goals for the season. Sydney did not get a lot of opportunities on goal at times, but the first year player was nominated for the Rising Star.

Hamilton became one of Sydney’s most important players in the forward half for her toughness and courage. She won 6.3 contested possessions per game and lived up to all expectations. Given she spent 86.2 per cent of time on the ground, Hamilton was a player considered entrenched among the red and white’s key talents.

LOOKING AHEAD

Hamilton makes her way onto this list despite limited games as she will be one to watch in 2023. While Sydney had a winless first season, the Swans have brought in some more experienced personnel who will only lift the confidence of the younger players. Alongside Chloe Molloy inside 50 and likely through the midfield at times, the 19-year-old will thrive from the experience.

Naturally with team improvement as well, Hamilton will get more opportunities inside 50 and could take her game to another level. The hard working utility comes in at number 23 and is expected to be even higher when Season 9 rolls around.
