2024 WAFLW Team of the Week: Round 16

TOP two sides East Fremantle and Claremont picked up a league-high five players in this week’s WAFL Women’s Team of the Week for Round 16, while both Perth teams were at the other end of the scale with just one representative.

Top-age young gun Zippy Fish earned the captaincy this week with another outstanding performance, recording 32 disposals, nine marks, two tackles, six inside 50s and the final goal of the game. She was one of five Sharks in the Round 15 side with defender Leanne Gubbins and forward Ashlee Atkins at respective ends, and a couple on the bench in skipper Ashleigh Gomes and forward Mylee Leitch.

Another top-ager in Lily Paterson earned 37 disposals, six marks and four inside 50s in Swan Districts’ big win over Peel Thunder. She was this week’s vice-captain with tall defender Isabella Edgley up at full back, and forwards Taylah Edwards (six goals) and Sienna Gerardi (three) both strong inside 50.

Claremont bottom-ager Juliet Kelly was a standout rotating between defence and midfield and even kicked a couple of goals, while fellow State Academy member Bec Anderson was strong in attack and earned her place at full-forward. Eva O’Donnell (six goals) had a day out with Jacinta Valentini (three) and Emily Bonser also prominent in the win.

Subiaco was the other winner of the weekend and recorded four players in the side. Krstel Petrevski was busy off half-back and through midfield, while Beatrice Devlyn in defence also saved the day on a number of occasions. Ruck Tess Lyons and forward Olivia Wolmarans also made the side off strong performances.

South Fremantle had two players on the bench just squeezed out of the starting side with Noa McNaughton and Shannyn Pomersbach, while Peel Thunder State Academy members Evie Cowcher and Holly Britton both trying hard through the loss. The two Perth sides contributed a player each in Lucy Greenwood (East Perth) and Megan Norbury rounding out the 24-strong squad.

The three emergencies this week were Tiah Toth (Subiaco), Sarah Viney (Claremont) and Bianca Webb (West Perth).
