SOUTH Australia’s representative squad to take on the best of the VFLW from the SANFL Women’s competition was announced yesterday, with 26 players named as part of the extended team. A possible dozen debutants were among the inclusions as the Croweaters look to back up their successful performance against Western Australia last year.
It is no surprise to see last year’s best on ground medallist Jessica Bates return, with a midfield likely comprising of Sturt’s Isobel Kuiper, West Adelaide’s Zoe Venning and Woodville-West Torrens’ Poppy Waterford among others. Coach Courtney Cramey will need to balance the two best rucks in the competition in Soriah Moon (South Adelaide) and Leah Cutting (West Adelaide), while recently delisted AFLW players Jade Halfpenny and Alex Ballard are also named in the team.
Despite only making a return from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in Round 2, Sturt speedster Zara Walsh has been named to join the likes of Central District star forward Katelyn Rosenzweig and Eagles’ contested marking specialist Klaudia O’Neill inside 50. Up the other end, the reliable Tiffany King, Glenelg’s Marie Martino and Bulldogs defender Madison Lane will hold down the fort.
Woodville-West Torrens boasts the most players in the squad, with the undefeated Eagles having six, ahead of Central District (four). Glenelg, Norwood, South Adelaide, Sturt and West Adelaide all have three, while North Adelaide has just the one.
Eagles coach Narelle Smith is the selection committee chairperson, while other Bruce Dawes (West Adelaide) and Talia Radan (Glenelg) around out the current SANFLW coaches. Sam Virgo returns as Cramey’s assistant coach.
The match takes place at Alberton Oval on Friday night, with the game streamed live and free via SANFL Now. Entry to the match is free as well.
