2025 WAFLW Team of the Week: Round 12

IN A THROWBACK to yesteryear, East Fremantle joined ladder leaders Claremont with a league-high five representatives in our WAFL Women’s Team of the Week for Round 12. The Sharks and Tigers both had big victories, while other winners South Fremantle and West Perth – who also accounted for their opponents well but had more even performers – had three and the four losing sides managed two players each.

Claremont midfielder Sarah Viney was one of five Tigers in the team, and earned the captaincy after a 30-disposal, two-mark, nine-tackle and four-inside 50 performance in the win over Perth. One of her opponents in Demons co-skipper Isabella Shannon was awarded the vice-captaincy after another big performance. She finished with 25 disposals, four marks, 12 tackles and six inside 50s in the loss.

Shannon was named alongside last week’s skipper in Jasmine Single who was prolific on the wing, as Claremont wing and State squad captain Kate Orme was named on the other wing. Other Tigers in the team were ruck Matilda Husband, forward Rachel Ortlepp and two-time Dhara Kerr Medallist Jayme Harken who made it onto the bench in her return WAFLW game from injury.

East Fremantle’s vital win over East Perth yielded five representatives with defender Madison Evans again named in the back six, while tall Sarah Wielstra takes up her spot at centre half-forward. Beside her is the exciting Noa McNaughton, while on the bench are skipper Ashleigh Gomes and forward Eve Wilson-Sieber, the latter of whom kicked two goals alongside Wielstra.

West Perth second gamer Lunay Van Den Heever booted 2.3 in the Falcons’ bounce-back win over Peel Thunder, with Madison Dodd named at half-back once more, while Mia Robis made her Team of the Week debut on the bench. From the Thunder, experienced pair Ebony Dowson and Cassie Davidson were prolific as always, while East Perth’s Hayley O’Donnell made it in at centre half-back, while teammate Layla Firns was named on the bench.

In South Fremantle’s upset win over Subiaco, three Dogs made it into the Team of the Week. Liusaidh Gilchrist was named off a half-back flank with tackling machine Jasmine Bazeley (half-forward) and the returning Alira Fotu (full-forward) rewarded for their two goals each. Subiaco’s reliable midfield duo of Krstel Petrevski and Paige Sheppard rounded out the 24-strong squad.

While there were plenty of choices for emergencies, the three chosen were South Fremantle’s Hannah Burt, Subiaco’s Hayley Corlett and West Perth’s Liliana Grassenis.
