Kings cull Sharks in horror conditions

COORPAROO has found the key to knocking off the previously invincible Southport, with the Kings winning a slog in torrential conditions at Giffin Park. The normally high-scoring Sharks were kept to just one goal for the entire match, with the home side getting up 2.5 (17) to 1.3 (9).
While the scores were low, it was the kind of weather that any score at all was a miracle and it brought the normally clinical Southport back to the pack. Despite blitzing most teams, the Sharks had no scored in the first half with Coorparoo kicking the only goal to that point which came in the first term. A relatively high-scoring fourth quarter saw both sides score, but Sharks unable to get enough good looks to take the lead.
The result ended an incredible 13-game winning streak from the Sharks who at times had a percentage over 1000 such was the remarkable nature of their victories. In defeat, Southport dropped 85.4 per cent to a still jaw-dropping 867.04. The Sharks are over 500 per cent clear of second placed Morningside, while Coorparoo is outright third but still well off the top two with a 10-4 win-loss record.
In a tackle fest, Coorparoo narrowly won the battle 88-83, while having 21 more hitouts (45-24) and five more clearances (23-18). There were just 32 inside 50s for the entire match, with Coorparoo’s 21 to Southport’s 11, far lower than the Sharks’ usual forward half domination.
Enjoying a strong season, Grace Roberts-White had 21 disposals, five clearances, six tackles and two inside 50s in the win, while Chelsea Winn (18 disposals, three clearances, six tackles and four inside 50s) and Ayla Fetahagic (16 disposals, seven tackles and two inside 50s) were also busy in the wet. Tilayna Nissen and reliable goalkicker Chelsea Chesterfield both slotted goals, while for the Sharks, Kierra Zerafa was her team’s lone scorer.
Tyla Crabtree (25 disposals, four tackles) unsurprisingly thrived in the conditions, while Maighan Fogas and Zerafa both had 17 disposals and four clearances, while combining for 18 tackles. Steph O’Brien (16 disposals, six tackles) showed her experience around the ground. Though the Sharks ruck combination had no answers for Renee Teys who was best on ground, racking up 45 hitouts and laying 11 tackles from 15 disposals in the win.
Southport was missing its host of start Under 18s who were representing Queensland in the AFLW Under 18 Championships, and will be without them for Round 15 against Wilston Grange on Saturday. Meanwhile the Kings will head to Graham Road where they face Aspley Hornets.
AROUND THE GROUNDS
Bond University secured its finals spot with a 35-point victory over sixth placed Aspley to build an insurmountable gap coming into the last fortnight of the season. The Bull Sharks got up 7.6 (48) to 2.1 (13) at home as skipper Shannon Nolan lead the way with 32 disposals, four clearances and eight tackles. Jasmyn Davidson (31 disposals, five clearances) and Kendra Blattman (22 disposals, three goals) were also huge in the win. Lucia Liessi (23 disposals, three marks and two clearances) had the most touches for the Hornets, while Monique Dufty (18 disposals, 30 hitouts, seven clearances and three tackles) was phenomenal through the ruck.
Morningside also felt the brunt of the weather during a five-point win over University of Queensland at Jack Esplen Oval. The Panthers got up 2.3 (15) to 1.4 (10) despite not scoring in the second half. Laura Roy (28 disposals, four marks, seven clearances and eight tackles) and Isabella Levine (21 disposals, seven clearances and two inside 50s) lead the way around the ball, with Greta Liell-Cock (17 touches, seven clearances and four inside 50s) also busy. Harriet Knijff was a standout for the Red Lionesses with 27 disposals, five clearances and five tackles.
Wilston Grange made light work of Moreton Bay, slamming home six goals in the final term to really put the foot down and run out 15.12 (102) to 0.3 (3) winners at Moreton Bay Central Sports Complex. Mackenzie Findlay (25 disposals, six marks, six clearances, four tackles and four inside 50s) and Keyshia Matenga (24 disposals, three marks, three clearances, three tackles, seven inside 50s and two goals) were both sensational, as Naomi Celebre booted a game-high four goals. Jessica Davy tried hard for the Lions with 20 disposals and four clearances.
In the last game of the round, Maroochydore had a comprehensive – though inaccurate – win over Yeronga South Brisbane. The Roos produced a whopping 27 scoring shots to one, but only booted five goals in a 5.22 (52) to 0.1 (1) result. Abbey Tognazzini (25 disposals, seven clearances and four inside 50s) and Abbey Rankin (21 disposals, three tackles, six inside 50s and a goal) were the top ball-winners, while for the Devils, Goldie Poultney helped herself to 24 disposals.
