2025 VFLW Finals preview: Week 1

SIX TEAMS remain in the hunt for the 2025 VFL Women’s premiership with the finals getting underway tomorrow. Just four teams will advance through to the second week, with the two knockout elimination final winners taking on the the top two sides in the semi-finals.

After trailing by as much as 22 points at half-time, Collingwood stormed back into the match to run over the top of the Roos with six unanswered goals. Tahlia Sanger (26 disposals) was the top ball-winner as Lily-Rose Williamson booted two goals. Maddie Di Cosmo and Alana Barba were the best for the Roos.

CHANGES

Collingwood has lost a trio to injury in Jordan Ivey, Molly Eastman and Millie Lang, while also losing Williamstown to the AFLW program since being signed as an injury replacement player. Coming into the lineup are Kasey Lennox, Marnie Jarvis, Zoe McCurdy and Sienna Courtney. The Roos have gone in unchanged from their last round win.

PREDICTION

Given the amount of changes at the Pies, and the fact the Roos have been the best team all year and deservingly premiership favourites, they should get up. Both teams have quality all over the park though and will be ones to watch.

Essendon had a fast start at Box Hill and never let the Hawks get back into the game. El Chaston (28 disposals, one goal) and Abbey McDonald (27 disposals, one goal) were both superb, while young guns Isla Baldwin and Amelie Prosser-Shaw tried hard for the home side.

CHANGES

Both teams have made three changes with a trio of AFLW-listed Hawks going out in Daisy Flockart, Elli Symonds and Sophie Butterworth, with the replacements coming in the form of Angelina Torcasio, Amy Cariss-Brett and Mikayla Lee. For the Bombers, they regan Sophie Molan and youngsters Madison Ibrahim and Megan Mifsud, replacing Ava Jordan, Grace Brooker and Marli Klaumanns-Moller.

PREDICTION

Box Hill has a side ready to challenge the top two teams, and with a mix of youth and experience are the tip in this game. Expect it to be a tight contest, but the home side should get up given the overall depth and strength across the field.

In a ripping contest, the two sides exchanged leads throughout the second half, but ultimately the Seagulls finished a point in front. Emily Eaves lead from the front for the winners, while Ashlee Thorneycroft was consistent as ever. Winnie Laing and Imogen Evans showed their AFLW experience for the Zebras.

CHANGES

Sandringham loses both Bianca Jakobsson and Rene Caris to St Kilda’s AFLW program, as well as Dandenong Stingrays forward Evelyn Connolly to Vic Country. They recall Emma Stuber, Chloe Saultry and Amy Halaby. Williamstown will regain a couple of key players in Megan Williamson and Georgia Howes who replace Talia Motta and Charli Sette.

PREDICTION

A fascinating battle that could be the best of the lost with everything on the line. The added experience of the Zebras might see them home in a nail-biter, though it genuinely is a coin toss given the strength of both sides and impressive depth.
