2023 AFL Sydney Women’s Premier Division Preview: Round 13

SIDES jostling for finals spots and others looking to turn their form around will face-off in Round 13 of the AFL Sydney Women’s Premier Division. We take a look at all four games taking place tomorrow.

MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY GOANNAS vs. UNSW-ES BULLDOGS
Saturday, July 8 @ Macquarie University, 11:40am

Fourth placed Macquarie University will look to keep pressure on the third placed Wolves with a win over the struggling UNSW-ES Bulldogs. The Bulldogs have lost nine on the trot since winning their opening match, and boast a percentage of just 40.41, compared to the Goannas’ 232.27, the third highest in the league.

The last time these sides faced off, the Goannas won in low-scoring contest, getting up 3.6 (24) to 0.1 (1). Caitlin Fletcher is in great form for the Goannas, kicking five goals in nine games and has been named among the best on nine occasions, while Hayley Stanford has been a consistent force for the Bulldogs despite the losing streak.

MANLY WARRINGAH WOLVES vs. NORTH SHORE BOMBERS
Saturday, July 8 @ Weldon Oval, 12:15pm

With the Goannas all but a certainty to win in the slightly earlier game, the pressure will be on the Wolves to ensure they do not slip up against the Bombers. The title contenders are 12 points adrift of the top two teams, but also hanging onto third spot by just two points. A loss to the Bombers would see them drop to fourth, while north Shore would likely jump up to sixth.

The last time the two sides met, Manly Warringah won 6.5 (41) to 1.4 (10), and up until last week’s defeat to East Coast Eagles, had won seven on the trot. Kate Salmon is one to watch for the Wolves as an up-and-coming goalscorer, while Lucy Krimmer has enjoyed a promising start to the season for the Bombers.

PENNANT HILLS DEMONS vs. UTS BATS
Saturday, July 8 @ Greenway Park, 12:40pm

A ladder-defining clash comes in the way of sixth placed Pennant Hills Demons up against second placed UTS Bats. If the Demons are to make finals, they will need to start notching up more consistent wins, now points outside the top five. A win would see them retake fifth spot, while UTS Bats need to continue their form to remain in touch with the top of the table East Coast Eagles.

When the Demons last travelled to Trumper Oval earlier in the season, they went down by 67 points to an impressive Bats outfit, and will be hoping to do better here. Jessica Quade (20 goals) is one of three Bats players inside the top four goalkickers for the season, while Demons’ forward Brianna Wade is fifth with 15 majors. Both will look to give their respective sides an advantage.

EAST COAST EAGLES vs. SOUTHERN POWER
Saturday, July 8 @ Kanebridge Oval, 4:50pm

Few could forget the 225-0 smashing that occurred last time these teams faced off at Waratah Oval, with no doubt some still concerned what this top against bottom clash could hold. The Eagles will win, and by a lot, it will just be a case of exactly how much. They are 10 wins and one draw this season with a percentage of 492.21, while the Power are bottom with just the one draw due to the game being called off.

Caitlin Davidson has slotted 28 goals this season for the Eagles, leading all-comers by eight in the 2023 seaon, while a further two Eagles are also in the top 10 with double-figure majors. She kicked 10 the last time these teams faced off, so has set the benchmark to reach. For the Power, Amy Kowski has been an important player and will have another big job on the weekend.
