GWV Rebels 10.13 (73) def. by Dandenong Stingrays 12.7 (79)
GWV REBELS:
#2 Harry Charleson
Defender | 182cm | 26/06/2006
Stats: 23 disposals, 5 marks, 4 rebound 50s
Charleson has reverted back to his role in defence of late and showcased great composure there on Saturday. He brought time in possession with twists and turns while assessing his options, proving willing to change angles or enact a switch. He was a constant option on the outside and put himself in good spots to intercept, using his momentum to get the Rebels going on the rebound.
#6 Jack Ough
Wing | 194cm | 15/12/2006
Stats: 17 disposals, 6 marks, 2 inside 50s
Ough has put together a consistent block of form ahead of the National Championships having spent some time on the sidelines. That continued in Round 10 with an outing highlighted by his clean hands and ability to power through traffic. Ough was one-touch below his knees and overhead, chiming in with some intercept marks and absorbing contact when required. After a venture into midfield, he has made the wing his own again.
#7 Oliver Hannaford
Defender | 180cm | 01/09/2006
Stats: 20 disposals, 4 marks, 4 tackles, 7 rebound 50s
Hannaford was up against it on Saturday with a rotation of matchups against Dandenong co-captains Harvey Langford and Cooper Hynes. The combative defender was up to the task and set the tone with his two-way intensity. He attacked by taking quick metres from the kick-ins, and defended by hunting the opposition with fierce defensive pressure. Hannaford tends to play in one gear – go – but is dangerous when driving his legs on the rebound.
#8 Jonty Faull
Key Forward | 195cm | 01/02/2006
Stats: 14 disposals, 4 marks, 5 goals
Faull made a triumphant return from injury in Round 10, booting five goals in his first game of the season. The key forward could have been forgiven for looking a little clunky at times and taking a few contests to find his groove, but eventually recaptured his craft. Over-ager Zane Snowden tried to give him very little, but Faull drew free kicks and held his own with great bodywork one-on-one. His set shot goalkicking was terrific and it would have been a great confidence booster to score within the opening three minutes of all but one quarter.
#19 Mitchell Lloyd
Tall Defender | 192cm | 15/03/2006
Stats: 16 disposals, 7 marks, 5 rebound 50s
Lloyd is one of the form defenders of the competition and continued that trend with another promising outing. His intercept game was terrific as usual, reading the play well to clunk clean marks and proving a brick wall in the first half. He was challenged in the way of ball use and one-on-one craft at times, but had little trouble getting his hands on the ball as GWV’s defensive general.
#20 Floyd Burmeister
Key Forward/Ruck | 198cm | 04/05/2006
Stats: 16 disposals, 6 inside 50s, 15 hitouts, 1 goal
Burmeister looked on track for a big game in the first half and allowed Faull to thrive as the deepest forward with his ability to present up the ground. Incredibly mobile at 198cm, the raw tall talent showed good dexterity to make use of delivery which hit the deck and utilised his springy leap when rucking. He was willing to jump in packs but struggled to clunk any major contested marks, which is an area for improvement.
DANDENONG STINGRAYS:
#1 Cooper Hynes
Midfielder/Forward | 190cm | 28/02/2006
Stats: 35 disposals, 5 marks, 1 goal
Typically a fast starter, Hynes spent plenty of his tickets in the early stages but went on to rack up a game-high 35 disposals. He was active from the offset and sharp by hand, displaying a willingness to share the ball and connect with teammates. Hynes’ strong vision and decision making waned as the game wore on, leading to more dump kicks under pressure, but he made a gut-busting run from end-to-end in the final quarter to get free inside 50 and snare a goal.
#2 Harvey Langford
Midfielder/Forward | 190cm | 15/03/2006
Stats: 21 disposals, 9 tackles, 7 inside 50s, 1 goal
While partner in crime and co-captain Hynes may have been more prolific, Langford certainly did damage with his 21 touches and seven inside 50s. He started up forward and booted Dandenong’s opening goal of the match, before immediately having an impact when thrust into the centre bounces. His vice-like handling and booming left boot made for stoppage exits which hurt the opposition, and he also did so with gritty tackling.
#10 Ben Hopkins
Midfielder/Defender | 190cm | 28/07/2005
Stats: 25 disposals, 4 marks, 4 inside 50s
Hopkins has made a move into midfield akin to Billy Wilson’s last year, but still mixed his time in defence and even on the wing. The over-ager showcased super quick and clean hands at the contest, and for a lighter frame, was not afraid to get stuck in. His hard running was noticeable but kicking on the move remains an area of improvement, even if he can utilise both feet.
#22 Jordan Doherty
Ruck | 199cm | 21/02/2005
Stats: 27 disposals, 6 marks, 8 hitouts, 1 goal
It’s not every day you rack up 27 disposals as a ruckman, but Doherty did exactly that in a dynamic showcase of his wares. The over-ager was like a fourth midfielder in the sense he could follow up at stoppages and win his own clearances, also doing so by snatching the ball out of ruck contests. Doherty’s composure and agility in traffic were terrific for a player his size, and he covered plenty of ground to impact at both ends.

Western Jets
Northern Knights
Western Jets 13.6 (84) def. Northern Knights 12.9 (81)
WESTERN JETS:
#3 Lucca Grego
Midfielder | 184cm | 15/09/2006
Stats: 22 disposals, 6 marks, 9 tackles, 1 goal
Grego was a match-winner on Saturday, booting a goal early in term four and setting up two more for Jack Gerardi to seal the deal. The skipper showed great poise in those situations and proved his leadership quality when the game was on the line. He was willing to hold possession for as long as possible, looking for opportunities to connect by hand and make better use of his clearances than simply blazing away. Grego also did plenty of the dirty work in a typically tough outing.
#11 Thomas McGuane
Midfielder | 177cm | 27/08/2007
Stats: 24 disposals, 3 marks, 5 inside 50s
Another prolific performance from McGuane sees his season disposal average sit just above 25. The 2025 Collingwood father-son prospect was sharp all day, darting his way through the corridor and showcasing terrific vision to make use of his foot skills. He hit kicks at obscure angles, albeit if he tried to be a little too cute at times and favoured his left side.
#12 Lachlan McArthur
Defender | 190cm | 09/12/2005
Stats: 17 disposals, 5 marks, 5 rebound 50s
McArthur has returned bigger numbers this season but can be proud of his effort on Saturday with a tough job in defence. The over-ager spent time matched up on Northern’s talls, conceding 5-10cm but bridging the gap with outstanding judgement of the ball in flight. McArthur took several intercept marks and knew when to either attack with his leap or stay down over the back. His rebound work was also effective in tough conditions for kickers.
#37 Lucas Impey
Ruck | 200cm | 12/12/2005
Stats: 19 disposals, 4 inside 50s, 30 hitouts
Another dominant display in the ruck saw Impey win the hitout count with 30, while also following up and imposing himself around the ground. Impey was a handy outlet down the line and proved difficult to beat aerially for his sheer size, also utilising that factor to grab from the ruck contest and force his own clearances. It was a performance typical of any solid over-age tall.
NORTHERN KNIGHTS:
#11 Lucas McInerney
Wing/Defender | 180cm | 28/02/2006
Stats: 18 disposals, 6 rebound 50s, 1 goal
McInerney is a train-on for the Vic Metro squad and should be highly motivated to make every post a winner as the championships get underway. The wingman was a little scrappy in the early stages but found his groove with active work on the outside and even hit the scoreboard in term one. He also got a run in defence, utilising his playmaking ability and foot skills from the last line, where he continued to chain possessions and spark transitions.
#23 Gabriel Stumpf
Key Forward/Ruck | 196cm | 23/11/2006
Stats: 13 disposals, 3 marks, 2 goals
His numbers may not jump off the page but Stumpf was highly impressive on Saturday. The athletic key forward combined well with Tom Sims in the early stages, getting on his bike to present up the ground while also creating scoring opportunities. A tough matchup for heigh and mobility, Stumpf was effective on the lead and finally made good on his promising plays with back-to-back goals in the third quarter. He could easily have had four or five goals with better set shot conversion.

Tasmania Devils
Sandringham Dragons
Tasmania Devils 6.12 (48) def. Sandringham Dragons 3.7 (25)
TASMANIA DEVILS:
#9 Toby Callow
Forward | 187cm | 28/07/2007
Stats: 12 disposals, 6 marks, 3 inside 50s
The brother of Devils graduate and former Hawthorn forward Jackson, Toby Callow is less tall than his sibling but has similarly strong marking ability. Half of his disposals on Sunday came from marks, highlighting Callow’s continual presentation on the lead and clean hands overhead. The bottom-ager plays above his height in that regard, doubling as a genuine target down the line or in transition. Callow had the chance to cap off his day with a goal but missed everything with his shot.
#11 Max Mapley
Key Defender/Forward | 199cm | 27/10/2005
Stats: 10 disposals, 3 marks, 2 hitouts
Mapley continued his venture to defence and looked quite comfortable in possession of the ball. The big man only took three marks for the match but two of them were intercepts – one as a defender, and the other as a forward in the second half. Mapley was willing to stand up in the contest and moved well for a player his size, showing promise as an over-ager.
#12 Rylee McHenry
Midfielder | 179cm | 17/07/2007
Stats: 22 disposals, 6 tackles, 5 inside 50s
McHenry has achieved personal-best disposal hauls over the last two weeks and made good on the opportunity to run through midfield once again. The solidly built bottom-ager provided plenty of positive momentum out of stoppages, driving his legs forward and injecting some power to the play. He lacked a little polish on his disposal at times but hit hard and broke tight passages open.
#18 Harry Elmer
Defender | 180cm | 13/04/2006
Stats: 18 disposals, 3 tackles, 2 rebound 50s
Elmer’s energy and surge style out of defence were terrific to watch. He positioned aggressively and streamed past on the outside to generate overlap run through the corridor, taking the game on with a sharp turn of speed. He began to balance out his attack-minded play in the second half with a few tough defensive efforts, and even got a run in midfield to cap off a productive day.
SANDRINGHAM DRAGONS:
#45 Luke Kennedy
Midfielder | 180cm | 11/10/2006
Stats: 18 disposals, 4 tackles, 3 rebound 50s
Along with the likes of Riely Collins, Kennedy was a mainstay in Sandringham’s engine room and did some nice things in a dour, low-scoring loss. The midfielder has enjoyed more time on-ball in the absence of some star Dragons, and displayed his neat work by hand on Sunday. Kennedy’s handling and ability to draw opposition players before disposing were quite effective, though he could have been a little sharper by foot.
#47 Lachlan Voss
Key Defender | 199cm | 19/04/2005
Stats: 12 disposals, 7 marks, 4 rebound 50s
Voss was Sandringham’s defensive rock once again and had two very different matchups in either half. He was initially opposed to 192cm 16-year-old Charlie Bovill and was quite confident in peeling off to intercept, backing his reading of the play. He did so with less frequency once 199cm over-ager Max Mapley was swung forward, though Voss himself switched to attack late in the game and showcased his long boot to even notch a minor score.

Calder Cannons
Oakleigh Chargers
Calder Cannons 11.13 (79) def. Oakleigh Chargers 6.7 (43)
By: Adrian Dixon
CALDER CANNONS:
#3 Jayden Nguyen
Small Defender | 177cm | 27/07/2006
Stats: 20 disposals, 5 marks, 5 tackles, 10 inside 50s
Nguyen provided plenty of dash out of defence and through the middle of the ground, with his long kicking game causing headaches for the Chargers. He was especially dangerous when sending the ball inside 50 for the Cannons, eventually having 10 entries registered across the four quarters. Nguyen’s speed and evasiveness were on show constantly throughout the day.
#5 Riley Leedham
Ruck/Key Forward | 195cm | 16/11/2006
Stats: 13 disposals, 5 marks, 2 goals
The imposing key forward/ruck prospect had his most influential game for the season, kicking two goals and it could easily have been a few more. He was very dangerous in the contest and wasn’t just bringing the ball to ground, but also followed up quite well for a player his size. Both of his goals were scored at important times; marking right before the quarter time siren and then in the second quarter where he roved a pack to goal. Leedham showed excellent movement and work rate around the ground, led up to the ball well, and also showed great IQ and decision making.
#10 Damon Hollow
Midfielder/Defender | 180cm | 30/03/2006
Stats: 22 disposals, 8 marks, 3 rebound 50s
The Cannons captain led by example all day and showed plenty of defensive nous with his intercepting and spoiling early setting the tone for the Cannons. Hollow’s kicking was a tad inconsistent throughout the game, however when he got his ball delivery by foot was right, it was lethal. Hollow displayed excellent composure and evasiveness all day, especially in key moments, rotating between the backline and on the ball.
#11 Ryan Eyre
Midfielder/Defender | 191cm | 19/03/2005
Stats: 26 disposals, 8 marks, 5 tackles, 5 inside 50s
In what turned out to be his last game for the Cannons, Eyre was prominent around the midfield all day providing plenty of pressure and grunt work around the contest which was a key to the Cannons victory. Rotating between the midfield and the backline, Eyre won numerous clearances and ensured that the ball was distributed well via foot and fought hard to win the footy even though the contest was fairly one sided. Eyre will spend the rest of his 2024 season listed with Essendon VFL.
#16 Noah Scott
Midfielder | 177cm | 23/08/2006
Stats: 23 disposals, 8 inside 50s, 4 rebound 50s
Scott started exceptionally well, displaying his intercept ability and providing plenty of run and carry. His ball delivery inside 50 was inconsistent at times and he can make better decisions, however his quick reactions off stoppages were a highlight along with his follow up work and creativity. Scott provided plenty of grunt in the midfield and took on the game with his strong running.
#37 Hussien El Achkar
Forward/Midfielder | 171cm | 02/04/2007
Stats: 10 disposals, 7 tackles, 3 goals
Predominantly rotating between the forwardline and midfield, the Essendon NGA prospect finished with three classy opportunist goals for the day and easily could have had more. He demonstrated sharp reflexes to score each goal, along with great evasiveness. When on the ball he demonstrated his ability to read the play, while also making smart decisions. El Achkar’s pressure acts were great along with his tackle technique, though he had a poor moment after running down Jagga Smith, having the free kick reversed in front of goal. Shortly after, El Achkar redeemed himself by kicking one of his two majors for the quarter, showing great resilience and focus.
OAKLEIGH CHARGERS:
#2 Ollie Badr
Small Defender | 177cm | 04/06/2005
Stats: 29 disposals, 8 marks, 6 tackles, 6 rebound 50s
Returning after a stint on the sidelines, Badr was given the early task of marking the dangerous Isaac Kako, restricting his output with his combative and physical approach while accumulating the ball down back and was seen as a go to player. His ball distribution by foot was shaky early, however improved the longer the game went on. Despite being undersized, Badr competed well with his overhead marking and tackle technique. He went forward late in the game and did his best to provide an option on a lead.
#3 Kobe Askew
Small Forward | 175cm | 16/01/2006
Stats: 14 disposals, 3 tackles, 2 goals
Despite it not being a day for small forwards for the Chargers, Askew continued to fight hard in the front half and kicked two goals from 14 disposals. Askew continually demonstrated good speed, evasiveness and running patterns, however set shot goalkicking is an area he can work on.
#7 Jagga Smith
Midfielder | 181cm | 28/01/2006
Stats: 40 disposals, 9 marks, 6 tackles, 6 inside 50s
After his efforts last week, Smith backed it up again with another prolific 40-disposal performance. Smith continually read the stoppages well while also continually following up his own disposals to provide an option for his teammates. Smith’s ball use was clean and always demonstrated composed distribution along with great evasiveness and strength to hold his own under pressure.
#23 Lucas Tovey
Key Defender | 198cm | 03/01/2006
Stats: 14 disposals, 8 marks, 4 rebound 50s
The key defender held up Oakleigh’s backline, repelling many of the Cannons’ forward thrusts with his intercept marking ability. He took eight marks for the game and distributed the ball with care out of the backline, showing excellent composure despite being under siege. Had it not been for Tovey, the scoreline could have looked a lot uglier for the Chargers.
- Team
Murray Bushrangers
Geelong Falcons
Murray Bushrangers 8.15 (63) def. Geelong Falcons 5.4 (34)
MURRAY BUSHRANGERS:
#9 Joe Berry
Forward | 180cm | 18/04/2006
Stats: 11 disposals, 3 tackles, 2 goals
At his creative best for parts of this game, Berry booted another two goals and had a hand in plenty more scores throughout the day. He was busy from the get-go, combining with others inside 50 and using his pace to cause chaos. Berry bagged his first goal in the opening quarter and slotted a second set shot late in the third term to set up a handy buffer heading into the final break. He just continues to pop up and make things happen.
#18 Cohen Paul
Wing | 193cm | 07/06/2006
Stats: 13 disposals, 3 marks, 3 inside 50s
Having enjoyed a solid block of games in midfield, Paul was sent back out to his usual wing role on Sunday and while less prolific, still got to showcase his best traits. The 193cm talent was a viable outlet option and used his power to burst forward, often leaving would-be tacklers in his wake or disposing of the ball as they hung off him. Paul’s punchy kicking and coverage of the ground also came in handy at different stages, and he has earned a berth in the Vic Country squad.
#20 Jack Whitlock
Key Forward/Ruck | 200cm | 16/05/2006
Stats: 13 disposals, 4 tackles, 2 goals
Continuing to recapture his best form after returning to the fold last week, Whitlock slowly built into the game on Sunday. He got going with back-to-back goals in the second quarter, first dobbing a free kick and then playing on from the top of attacking 50 to convert well on the run. He missed chances to add to his tally after half time but had moments where his reach was too good overhead, and his nimbleness showed at ground level – either way, he has a strong set of hands.
#24 Matt Whitlock
Key Forward | 199cm | 16/05/2006
Stats: 9 disposals, 4 marks, 2 goals
Much like his twin brother, Whitlock had a significant height advantage over his direct opponent but faced periods of frustration. Still, the dynamic and talented tall covered the ground beautifully, playing the high forward role with Jack settling in deeper. Whitlock worked his opponent over on the lead and showed good craft to nudge him under high balls before setting off out the back. He booted two goals for the day, both at the same end of the ground.
GEELONG FALCONS:
#20 Lachie Jaques
Defender | 184cm | 01/06/2006
Stats: 28 disposals, 4 tackles, 7 rebound 50s
Leading all comers with 28 disposals, Jaques was typically productive on the rebound and helped relieve pressure with his distributional skills on the last line. With energy and pace, the top-ager balanced his contributions in slow play with breakneck transitional running. He was reigned in by game Murray opponents on occasion but generated strong momentum when he built up a full head of steam coming out of defence or through the corridor.
#27 Liam Kershaw
Wing/Defender | 194cm | 17/10/2005
Stats: 21 disposals, 2 marks, 3 inside 50s
In his most productive game since Round 2, Kershaw looked at home on the wing and had his moments going either way. He kickstarted his game with a terrific second effort to follow up a handball which missed the target, showing good range and closing speed to catch his opponent holding the ball. The over-ager also swept back to help the defence and be an outlet in transition, chaining runs down the line. His aerial support was then required down back in the second half.

Bendigo Pioneers
Gippsland Power
Bendigo Pioneers 11.6 (72) def. by Gippsland Power 11.10 (76)
BENDIGO PIONEERS:
#2 Archer Day-Wicks
Wing/Forward | 186cm | 13/05/2006
Stats: 15 disposals, 4 marks, 4 inside 50s
Having had stints there in recent weeks, Day-Wicks started on the wing with a rotation to the forwardline. He’s a dangerous mover of the ball and proved as much as he rose for high marks between the arcs, before wheeling around and darting the ball forward. The classy prospect lifted in the final quarter with a move into the centre bounces, getting busy in attacking phases and providing two direct goal assists.
#3 Tobie Travaglia
Utility | 187cm | 26/10/2006
Stats: 24 disposals, 4 marks, 6 tackles, 1 goal
Travaglia cut his teeth as a wingman last year and started the game there on Sunday, rotating forward like Day-Wicks before getting a run on-ball. He was integral in the Pioneers’ five-goal final quarter, booting a goal and playing with intent. Earlier, his turn of speed helped open up the game but his ball use on the run could have been better. Still, few get stuck in like he can.
#5 Oliver Poole
Forward/Midfielder | 183cm | 18/03/2005
Stats: 14 disposals, 5 tackles, 3 goals
Poole has been in the goals of late and backed up four last week with a haul of three in Round 10. The over-ager only took three marks for the day but a couple of them were outstanding efforts deep inside 50, leading to straightforward scores. Poole rose to take the ball strongly overhead and owned his space. That same determination was evident when he moved into the centre bounces and laid a gutsy holding-the-ball tackle in term three.
#8 Dayten Uerata
Midfielder | 184cm | 28/10/2005
Stats: 17 disposals, 10 tackles, 4 inside 50s
A powerful member of Bendigo’s midfield group, Uerata refused to be tied down and constantly looked to surge his side forward. He used his quick step to find space to get long kicks away, but was also capable of standing up in tackles. While prone to scrappy foot skills, the over-ager put speed on the ball and provided strong defensive intensity too.
#11 Connor Evans
Defender | 182cm | 02/06/2006
Stats: 23 disposals, 7 marks, 10 rebound 50s
Evans could hardly have timed what was arguably his true breakout game for Bendigo, on the eve of the National Championships. The smooth moving defender owned the Pioneers’ defensive 50, rising for a series of intercept marks with a fluent run and jump at the ball. Evans’ clean hands were also useful at ground level and he distributed the ball soundly on his favoured left foot. The only real blemish on his game was a deliberate rushed behind in the final quarter.
#42 James Barrat
Tall Forward | 193cm | 23/11/2006
Stats: 15 disposals, 4 marks, 3 goals
Barrat looked seriously imposing at times as Bendigo’s spearhead forward, en route to maintaining his streak of booting multiple goals in every game this season. He competed hard in the air and generated chances that way, but was also willing to follow up his work. Barrat ran out the game strongly by snaring two goals in the final quarter – including a slightly less dynamic Daniel Wells karate kick from the goalsquare.
GIPPSLAND POWER:
#12 Jesse Craven
Midfielder | 176cm | 21/04/2005
Stats: 31 disposals, 7 tackles, 10 inside 50s
Craven was Gippsland’s biggest ball winner on Sunday and made his touches count. The over-ager injected speed to the game, breaking forward of stoppages in short bursts before launching the ball forward. That kind of play proved repeatable for him throughout the game, with Craven competitive enough to win his own ball at the contest or in transition between the arcs.
#27 Asher Eastham
Forward | 188cm | 13/05/2006
Stats: 12 disposals, 4 marks, 2 goals
Eastham has hit the scoreboard in each of his outings this season and bagged multiple goals for the fifth time in seven games on Sunday. He’s a real ‘moments’ player, capable of sitting on heads – just ask Connor Evans – or producing purple patches with his work on the lead. Eastham’s overhead marking and extension at the ball is eye-catching, as was his clever crumb over the back for a goal in the second quarter.
#35 Noah Christy
Forward | 183cm | 04/06/2006
Stats: 15 disposals, 5 inside 50s, 4 goals
Christy popped up for a game-high four goals against Bendigo, enjoying a day out in what was clearly his best outing since Gippsland’s opening match. The top-ager converted two set shots and two snaps, with his second goal in open play a quite conventional front-and-centre crumb. He took a terrific one-handed mark for his fourth major and showed great finishing ability from a range of situations.
