2021/22 Women’s 1sts Mid Season Review – Carlton

IT is halfway through the Women’s Premier 1sts competition, so over the next week we are taking a look at where all the teams are sitting as we head into the back half of the season. Today’s focus is Carlton Blues, who currently sit second on the table.

The season thus far

After rain ensured no one got to play on the opening weekend, Carlton got its season off to a great start by earning a bonus point win over Essendon Maribyrnong Park. Next up was the battle of the Blues against the True Blues, and Carlton were able to earn another bonus point win.

Next up their undefeated run came to an end at the hands of Ringwood. They were able to get their season back on track the following weekend with a win over reigning champions Dandenong.

Finally, the last round before Christmas saw another bonus point win for the Blues. This time it was over cellar dwellers Plenty Valley.

Who’s played well?

The two standouts with the bat so far this season are Nipuni Hansika and Sophie Reid. Sri Lankan international Hansika has come in and absolutely dominated with the bat. So far this season, she has made 257 runs at an average of 85.67 and a strike rate of 76.9. This includes two not outs, and her top score so far this season was a 95 not out.

Reid on the other hand has come across from Plenty Valley and been an absolute star. So far this season, Reid has made 221 runs at an average of 44.2 and a strike rate of 77.5. Her top score so far has been 110 against Prahran.

Rounding out the top five with the bat so far this season are Cailin Green, Eve Sheehan and Kira Grace.

From a bowling perspective, Madison Albers has been the pick of the bunch for the Blues. In five matches, she has taken 11/179 off 46 overs. This includes six maidens, and she is the only Blue to take a double digit number of wickets so far this season. Her best figures so far this season was 3/28.

Skipper Adelaide Campion is next on the list, after taking 5/69 so far this season from 26 overs in four matches. This figure includes four maidens, and her best figures in a game so far this season are 2/11.

Rounding out the top five best bowlers so far this season are Green, Ella Baulch and Rebeka Vandort.

The rest of the season ahead

Carlton’s great start to the season has put them in a great position heading into the back half of the season. The next month sees Carlton play Box Hill twice, and Melbourne and EMP once each.

At a bare minimum three of those games are winnable, but the Melbourne game will certainly be a challenge. Melbourne are the team to beat this season, and have been in ripping form in the first half of the season.
