Favourites do it easy on Day 2

DAY 2 at the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup saw some dominant displays from the favourites, with England and Australia both picking up wins to begin their campaigns.

England do it easy first up

England cruised to victory in its first up match of the tournament, downing the West Indies by seven wickets. The West Indies chose to bat first, and they made a productive but not mind blowing start to their innings. However this would ultimately be their best partnership of the innings, as their back end in particular was particularly disastrous.

They finished on 7/135, but with the English conceding a whopping 18 extras it could have been much worse. The extras count outscored everyone bar two of the West Indian batters, with only Hayley Matthews (42) and Shemaine Campbelle (34) outscoring the extras tally. Ecclestone was the pick of the bowlers for England, picking up 3/23 from her four overs.

In reply the chase was not too much of a problem for the English, reaching the tally halfway through the 15th over, with Nat Sciver-Brunt top scoring with 40 not out. Chinelle Henry picked up two wickets for the West Indies, but it was not enough as England cruised home.

Australia thrash Trans Tasman rival

Reigning champions Australia began its campaign with an ominous performance, thrashing neighbour New Zealand by 97 runs. The Australians batted first and made the very competitive total of 9/173 from their 20 overs.

Despite Beth Mooney’s early failure with the bat, it mattered little as Alyssa Healy and Meg Lanning got to work to steer the ship of the innings back on course with a 70 run partnership. Healy went on to top score with 55, while Lanning made 41 and Ellyse Perry made 40. Meanwhile for New Zealand Lea Tahuhu and Amelia Kerr were both dangerous with the ball, picking up three wickets each.

In reply, the Kiwis were no match for the Aussies, as the Aussies ripped through the Kiwi line-up. Ash Gardner was particularly dangerous, picking up 5/12 from her three overs, while Megan Schutt also picked up two wickets. Only three New Zealand batters made a double figure score, with Kerr top scoring with 21.
