Strikers flame ‘Canes to remain in finals hunt

ADELAIDE Strikers have jumped into fifth on the BBL|13 ladder after comfortably accounting for the Hobart Hurricanes at Adelaide Oval last night. Not even a belligerent unbeaten knock of 95 (61) from Ben McDermott was enough to stop the hosts keeping their finals hopes alive.

Sent in to bat, the Hurricanes fell to 5-36 but were carried to a defendable 7-165 as McDermott exploded in the second half of the innings. After sitting at around a run-a-ball halfway through his knock, the opener blasted 61 off his last 29 balls faced to carry his bat as wickets fell around him.

Player of the Match Cameron Boyce (2-13) removed the remainder of the top six alongside Jamie Overton (3-23), though there was some semblance of resistance from Hurricanes number eight Chris Jordan, who whacked 30 off just 15 deliveries.

In reply, the Strikers got off to a hot start as openers Matt and D’Arcy looked to make a Short night of it. The pair blitzed an opening stand of 45 off just 17 balls, helping set up a powerplay which yielded 57 runs. After D’Arcy departed for 18, Chris Lynn (37 off 26) picked up the slack alongside Matt (45 off 32).

Timely inclusion, Alex Carey was then left to steer the home side to victory, doing so with a classy dig of 36 (26). Injury was added to insult for the Hurricanes, with quick Riley Meredith (side strain) failing to complete his third over of the night – although not before dismissing Lynn.

The two sides will again do battle tomorrow night in a return leg at Blundstone Arena. Adelaide has its sights firmly set on the top four, now sitting a single point behind the Melbourne Stars. Both remaining games are must-win for the Strikers, who also take on Sydney Thunder in their final fixture.
