Skippers call draw on Windies tour match

THE WEST Indies have completed their preparations for the upcoming Test series against Australia, playing out a draw in their three-day tour match against the Cricket Australia XI today. Both teams shook hands at 4:30pm local time in Adelaide, with a result deemed unreachable late on day three.

Play ended upon the dismissal of CA XI batter Jack Clayton (32), leaving the hosts stranded at 5-149 and 244 runs short of chasing down the set target of 392. The Windies were in a commanding position throughout the match and arguably stood a chance of victory, but had ultimately seen enough.

>> Recaps: Day 1 | Day 2

Today’s morning session began with the tourists 214 runs ahead. The overnight partnership between Joshua Da Silva and Kavem Hodge continued, and the pair went on to post a 163-run stand. While Da Silva did enough to bring up his ton, Hodge was flukily bowled for 99 in a cruel end to his knock.

Opting to bat on and put the lead beyond any reasonable doubt, Justin Greaves (41) and Zachary McCaskie (25) remained unbeaten as the Windies declared on 5-315. Liam Haskett found the most success with the ball, collecting figures of 3-65 as CA XI’s sole multiple wicket taker.

In response to the mammoth task at hand, CA XI openers Tim Ward and Jayden Goodwin made up decent ground in their 14 overs before tea. They put on 68 runs at nearly five an over to cut the deficit to 325 heading into the final session. Any hope of an incredible chase ended there, though.

The hosts collapsed to lose 3-6 in the first seven overs after tea, eventually switching gears back into survival mode to see out the result. Kevin Sinclair ripped through the Aussie top three to finish with 3-38, while Greaves and Gudakesh Motie also got amongst the wickets.

At the forefront of those to impress for the tourists were Da Silva, allrounder Hodge and firebrand quick Shamar Joseph. The latter two are among the seven uncapped players in the West Indies’ 15-man squad set to take on reigning World Test Champions, Australia in a two-match series.

The first match gets underway in Adelaide on January 17, before the teams head to Brisbane on January 25. Expect a fresh-looking and exuberant West Indies side to tackle the greatest challenge in Test cricket, under skipper Kraigg Brathwaite.
