Brutal bowling helps Giants deliver killer blow

A STARRING performance from Beth Mooney has helped Gujarat essentially eliminated the UP Warriorz from the WPL finals race.

The Warriorz are not officially out despite the result, but things really have to go right for them in order to make finals.

The Giants posted 8/152 before they restricted the Warriorz to only 5/144.

Gujarat made a pretty strong start to its innings, going at about 7.5 runs an over. Then the wobbles came, with 4/42 lost in the next six overs.

Things did not really lift from there, with no big partnerships to show for it, but that fast paced start meant that the final total was still competitive.

Mooney was the star with the bat, smashing 10 fours and a six on her way to 74 not out. Laura Wolvaardt also had a solid innings at the top of the order, making 43 from just 30 balls.

Meanwhile for the Warriorz it was Sophie Ecclestone who was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets to her name, while Deepti Sharma collected two of them.

The start to UP’s reply can only be described as a disaster. Not even one and a half overs in, they were already 3/4 and just over three overs later they were 4/16.

This shocking start meant that the Warriorz had very little hope of reaching the target, which is what eventually happened.

Shabnam Md was the star bowler for the Giants, picking up two of those three early wickets before returning later to pick up a third. Kathryn Bryce and Ash Gardner also chipped in with a wicket each.

Meanwhile the only ones to make any kind of score for UP was Sharma with 88 not out and Poonam Khemnar with 36 not out. No one else even got into double figures.
