Delhi’s demolition sees Capitals claim top perch

THE Delhi Capitals have finished on top of the WPL ladder for the second straight year after they defeated the Gujarat Giants overnight to claim the minor premiership.

The win also means that the Capitals are straight into the Final, bypassing the Eliminator.

Delhi restricted the Giants to only 9/126 in last night’s final match of the season, before reaching the target in just over 13 overs.

The start to Gujarat’s innings truly was a sign of what was to come for the Giants as they found themselves 1/1 and then 2/12 just two and a half overs later.

It was not until the sixth wicket partnership where things got any kind of momentum, where Bharti Fulmali and Kathryn Bryce added 68 to the tally in the only combination of any kind of substance. Unsurprisingly those two were also their team’s top scorers, making 42 and 28 not out respectively.

However, once that partnership was broken things then fell apart again, with the Giants only adding 10 more runs to their total.

On the flipside of the equation, the wicket taking duties were shared pretty evenly amongst the Capital’s bowlers, with Marizanne Kapp, Shikha Pandey and Minnu Mani all picking up two wickets each.

Delhi did have a brief hiccup to begin its chase, losing two wickets in the space of an over, but once Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues got going, things firmly swung back in Delhi’s favour. The combined for a 94 run stand to just about get the job done, which left Rodrigues and Kapp with little left to do once Verma was dismissed. Verma made 71, while Rodrigues finished on 38 not out.

Meanwhile Tanuja Kanwar was the only Giant to pick up a wicket, picking up two, while Laura Wolvaardt’s run out was wicket number three.
