2022 Australian Open Scoreboard: Day 1

THE 2022 Australian Open got underway yesterday and in Rookie Me Central’s Australian Open Scoreboard, see how every match went down.

The men’s singles went largely to plan, with only Sebastian Korda‘s win over British 12th seed Cameron Norrie, and Australian wildcard Aleksandar Vukic victory 30th seed South African Lloyd Harris the sole seeded upsets. That did not mean the day did not go without some close shaves, including 18th seed and recent title Sydney Tennis Classic winner Aslan Karatsev having to fight back from a two sets to one deficit against Jaume Munar to win in five. The other recent title winner in Adelaide International champion Thanasi Kokkinakis did not manage to fight through it, dropping out in a shock straight sets loss to German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann. Fellow home nation representative James Duckworth also dropped out to Adrian Mannarino, whilst 16th seed Christian Garin stopped a comeback from Argentinian Facundo Bagnis to win win in five sets.

Meanwhile the women’s singles had a couple of big upsets with the top two United States representatives suffering losses. It was bad news for 2020 Australian Open winner and 11th seed Sofia Kenin who was still carrying points from her triumph. She went down to the in-form Madison Keys, whilst 18th seed Coco Gauff suffered a shock loss to China’s Qiang Wang. It was a great day for Chinese athletes, with young guns, wildcard Xiyu Wang and qualifier Qinwen Zheng both getting up in their respective matches. There was just the one retirement too, with serial retiree and medical timeout caller Dayana Yastremska retiring at 0-5 in the third set against Madison Brengle, in a momentum-flowing match.
