WA announces AFLW U18s & U16s squads

WESTERN Australia has announced its Under 18s and Under 16s squads for the upcoming AFLW National Championships. The official jumper presentation took place last night, with 24 players named in the Under 18s squad, and a further 25 players nominated for the Under 16s squad.

Western Australia takes on Vic Country in the Under 16s Championships this Sunday at Arden Street, before clashing with South Australia on April 30 at Pentanet Stadium. The Under 18s Sandgropers open their account against South Australia as part of a double-header that day, with games against the Allies at Blacktown on August 13, and back home at Pentanet Stadium on August 19 taking on Vic Country.

East Fremantle has dominated the Under 18s squad with seven of the 24 players coming from the Sharks. They include AFLW Academy member Georgie Cleaver, fellow key position tall Anjelique Raison, classy bottom-ager Zippy Fish and in-form over-ager Mylee Leitch.

Bottom-age small forward Noa McNaughton, South Fremantle teammate Molly O’Hehir and top-age Claremont speedster Ella Slocombe are also primed for big carnivals.

At Under 16s level, there are already a number of players who have featured for their respective sides at WAFL Women’s level. Defenders, Peel Thunder’s Evie Cowcher and Subiaco’s Olivia Crane are among the most consistent, with fellow tall Olivia Wolmarans also a headache for opposition defender. In midfield, the likes of West Perth’s Mia Russo, Swan Districts’ Carys D’Addario and Claremont’s Juliet Kelly are others to keep an eye on.
