SQUADS | Young Guns set for Metro test
THE ANNUAL Victorian Young Guns series is set to get underway on Sunday, with the over-age squad taking on Vic Metro. While the showcase fixtures are essentially additional trials for many Under 18 representative hopefuls, they more prevalently serve as auditions for AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft candidates to shine on the big stage.

Selected by AFL recruiters, the Young Guns squad is 24 players strong, comprising of 22 2004-born prospects and just two from the 2003-born talent pool. All players included are eligible for the May 31 Mid-Season Draft, with many currently competing in the Coates Talent League as over-agers, or in the VFL.
The likes of Gippsland Power forward Ryan Maric, Eastern Ranges ruck Clay Tucker, and Box Hill bolter Ethan Stanley are among those who have been heavily courted for said intake, and come into the series as ones to watch. There are some former AFL train-ons amongst the group too, including Mitch Szybkowski, Luke Teal, and West Australian Jack Cleaver.
The Metro squad features three National Academy members in Northern Knights ruck William Green and running defenders Nathan Philactides (Oakleigh Chargers) and Archie Roberts (Sandringham Dragons). A bunch of stars are missing, but will inevitably slot straight into the lineup once the Under 18 National Championships commence.
In a second game next Sunday at Princes Park, the Young Guns will take on Vic Country. In a similar vein, the fixture will allow Country candidates to trial for the final Under 18 squad. Calder Cannons assistant coach Matt O’Connor will coach the Young Guns, while Sandringham Dragons mentor Rob Harding takes the reigns with Metro.
