Allies announce 2023 Under 18 squad

THE 2023 Allies squad has been announced ahead of this year’s AFL Under 18 National Championships, with 31 players from the Northern Territory, NSW-ACT, Queensland, Tasmania selected to compete for the amalgamated side.

Six players who made the cut as bottom-agers in 2022 will return this year, namely Caiden Cleary, Colby McKercher, Ethan Read, Jake Rogers, Ryley Sanders and Jed Walter. All six also help make up the group of 10 National Academy members included in the latest squad.

Other AFL Academy stars to enter the equation include first round prospect Connor O’Sullivan, Tasmania Devils goalsneak Jack Callinan, lively Northern Territory forward Orlando Turner, and Swans Academy talent Lachlan Cabor.

Only three bottom-agers have been named – Leonardo Lombard, Sam Marshall, and Clay Shadforth – while five over-agers add to a squad which is otherwise dominated by 2005-born talent, like the 10 AFL Academy players listed above.

Swans Academy coach Mark McVeigh will take the reigns after leading his side to the best record of any Northern Academy in this year’s Coates Talent League stint. Fittingly, NSW-ACT is the best represented state/territory with 12 players. Queensland has nine, while six are from Tasmania and four from the NT.

The group will come together for a training came in Sydney on the weekend as the national carnival draw closer. An away trip to face South Australia will open the championships on June 4 at Thebarton Oval. The Allies will also play a ‘home’ game at the same venue against Western Australia.
