2024 SANFLW Team of the Week: Round 2

GLENELG and Norwood topped the SANFL Women’s competition for Team of the Week representatives with four apiece in what was an even spread of players across the board. The midfield was particularly difficult to try and select with a stack of talented players taking control across Round 2 on the weekend.

The Bays and Redlegs topped the competition, with fellow winners West Adelaide and Central District recording three. Losing sides North Adelaide and Woodville-West Torrens had three apiece, while Sturt and South Adelaide recorded two for this round.

Captaining the side this week is Glenelg ball-winner Jessica Bates who racked up a remarkable 27 disposals, 11 tackles, 13 clearances and six inside 50s, as well as kicked two behinds. She was joined in the side by Port Adelaide listed duo, Jasmin Stewart and Piper Window who both had influential games, as well as former Bays skipper Ellie Kellock who slotted into the forward pocket following a couple of goals and rotating between forward and midfield.

The vice-captain for this week’s team went to Sturt’s Isobel Kuiper who was instrumental in the Double Blues’ loss, picking up 24 disposals, five marks – one contested – six clearances, two inside 50s and five rebound 50s. Kuiper was in the team with top-age young gun India Rasheed kicking a coupe of goals from 21 disposals.

Completing the on-ball group was top-ager Asha Dufour, named in the centre after 20 disposals, seven marks – one contested – five clearances and four inside 50s. She was joined in the side by fellow teenager Emma Kilpatrick and AFLW-listed midfielder, Keeley Kustermann.

Norwood also had four representatives in the Team of the Week alongside Glenelg, headlined by experienced duo, Najwa Allen (half-back) and Shai Hiscock (half-forward). The Redlegs also had a couple of players on the bench in Sachi Syme and Elle Lineage who were prolific in midfield.

Central District forwards Katelyn Rosenzweig and Jasmine Evans each kicked three goals to be the standout goalkickers for the round and lineup next to each other in the Team of the Week. Defender Georgia Madigan slotted into a back pocket after another strong effort.

North Adelaide winger Katelyn Pope was vital in the Roosters’ attack despite the defeat, picking up 24 disposals, three marks, three tackles, two inside 50s and four rebound 50s. Roosters defenders Kristi Harvey and Sarah Steele-Park pair up again in the Team of the Week to take the key position posts.

Woodville-West Torrens skipper Annie Falkenberg (19 disposals, seven rebound 50s) rounds out the defence, with ruck Leah Cutting and midfielder Poppy Waterford also making the team. Completing the 24-player side was South Adelaide duo, Caitlin Couch and Nikki Nield who were both strong through the middle of the ground.

Though difficult to just add three emergencies, this week it was Brooke Boileau (South Adelaide), Jessica Edwards (North Adelaide) and Christina Leuzzi (Woodville-West Torrens).
