2025 SANFLW Team of the Week: Round 2

A SECOND successive win for West Adelaide to open the 2025 SANFL Women’s season saw the Bloods become the most represented side in our Round 2 Team of the Week. West Adelaide boast four players in our 24-strong squad, with fellow winners and unbeaten sides Central District and Woodville-West Torrens having three.

Round 2 victors North Adelaide and the side they beat in South Adelaide also had a trio of representatives, with losing teams Sturt (three), Glenelg (three) and Norwood (two) completing the side for this week.

Though on one of the losing sides for Round 2, it was hard to deny that Glenelg skipper and two-time league best and fairest winner Jess Bates was a standout performer across the weekend. She racked up a league-high 34 touches, as well as three marks (one contested), seven tackles, six clearances, four inside 50s and a goal.

Bates was named our captain for the week in the hypothetical team, with Central District forward Katelyn Rosenzweig her deputy. Rosenzweig slotted 4.3 from 13 disposals, four marks (three contested) and two inside 50s, with fellow Dogs forward Lauren Breguet and match-winning defender Madison Lane also making the side for Round 2.

Bates was not the only Bay in the team with fellow experienced star Ellie Kellock kicking two crucial goals among 22 disposals and four marks, while getting back defensively to have five rebound 50s. Young defender Tessa Davis made it two Team of the Weeks from two matches with another strong effort in the back 50.

West Adelaide trumped all-comers when it came to nominations, with inside midfielders Ruby Ballard and Hannah Button both featuring in the side following their combined 38 touches and 13 clearances. Wing Emma Kilpatrick (20 disposals, nine inside 50s) was a star for the Bloods in the win over Norwood, with opposition wing Sarah Branford on the other side of the teamsheet. Redlegs defender Ashlee Gould slotted into the back pocket, while speedy forward Lucy Waye was West Adelaide’s fourth representative.

The other unbeaten winning side from Round 2 was Woodville-West Torrens who had a trio of players in our Team of the Week. Ruck Leah Cutting made it for a second successive round slotting onto the bench this time, with smart top-age utility Imogen Trengove impressing up forward with a couple of goals from 19 touches and seven inside 50s. Key forward Klaudia O’Neill provided a target and was the other Eagle this week.

North Adelaide’s breakthrough win over South Adelaide saw a couple of Roosters defenders slot into the side, with Jamie Parish and Erin Sundstrom sharing 34 disposals and providing constant rebound from the back 50. Midfielder Julia Clark also made the Team of the Week for Round 2. As for their opponents, bottom-age star Emma Charlton was enormous through the midfield and half-forward, while defender Tiffany King and midfielder Caitlin Couch were their reliable selves.

Producing an incredible performance through the ruck, Jasmin Fejo was enormous for Sturt during its tight loss to Central District, amassing 22 disposals, six marks (one contested), 32 hitouts and six clearances to secure the first ruck role. Midfielders Isobel Kuiper (27 disposals, six tackles and 11 clearances) and Monique Bessen (17 disposals, six tackles and seven clearances) were the others to earn spots in the side from the Double Blues.

Forward Summer Ross only just missed out on a spot in the 24, with the Sturt top-ager named an emergency following her two goals from 12 touches up forward. Midfielders Zara Molloy (North Adelaide) and Zoe Venning (West Adelaide) were the other emergencies.
