Bull Sharks bulldoze Hornets into semis

REIGNING QAFL Women’s Grand Finalists Bond University advanced through to the semi-finals following a dominant 11-goal win over Aspley Hornets. In a battle of the third and sixth placed sides, the Bull Sharks proved too good, coming way with a 14.9 (93) to 4.3 (27) win at Bond University Oval on Saturday.
Competition leading goalkicker Kendra Blattman got her side off to the perfect start four minutes into the match with a major, before Aspley’s Kaitlyn Day cut the deficit to just two points as the Hornets got on the board five minutes later.
From there however, it was all Bond University, piling on five unanswered goals to half-time, with Aspley only managing a further two behinds. A pair of six-pointers to Isabella Iverach – including one just before heading into the rooms – guided the Bull Sharks to an ominous 32-point lead.
Coming out of the main break, proven goalkicker Jessica Stallard ensured her side had a glimmer of hope, but four goals to end the premiership quarter – including two to Brianna Moyes and a second major to Blattman – put any worry of a comeback quickly to bed.
Filling her boots in the last quarter, Blattman kicked two in the first six minutes – and a third later in the quarter, with Moyes also kicking a fourth goal as the pair ran rampant over the visitors. Day and Jesse McMillan did kick a couple of consolation goals as Aspley fought to the final siren, but it would ultimately be too little, too late.
Shannon Nolan was terrific around the ball, winning 28 disposals, six marks, five clearances – including four centre clearances – and kicking a goal, while ruck Maisy Evans had 16 hitouts to go with 26 disposals, three marks and five inside 50s. Ella Calleja (22 disposals, three marks, five clearances and eight inside 50s) was key in linking the midfield to attack, while Blattman and Moyes kicked 9.6 between them in the win.
Day’s 16 disposals, four clearances, three inside 50s and two goals were a standout, with McMillan (15 disposals, three clearances, three tackles and a goal) and Anna van de Wiel (16 disposals, two marks and three tackles) among the better ball-winners. Ruck Monique Dufty tried hard all day with 22 hitouts and four clearances, while Emma MacDonald went at 80 per cent efficiency and produced five tackles in the loss.

AROUND THE GROUNDS
In the other match, Coorparoo fought back from a nine-point deficit at half-time to pile on five unanswered majors in the third term and defeat Wilston Grange by 20 points. A dour fourth term – where just one behind to the Gorillas was the only addition to the score – was all the Kings needed to salute with a 6.3 (39) to 3.1 (19) victory.
Chloe Haines and Chelsea Chesterfield were multiple goalkickers in the win, while Ayla Fetahagic and Chesea Winn were enormous around the stoppages. Both players had 22 disposals and eight clearances, with the former running at a disposal efficiency of 77.3, while also laying four tackles. Lucy Schneider (20 disposals) was also lively in the win, recording an 85 per cent disposal efficiency.
Over-age AFLW Draft prospect Kaiya Hides was everywhere for the Gorillas, picking up 20 disposals, laying eight tackles, and having four inside 50s and booting two goals. Grace Osborne and Siobhan Senior both had an equal team-high of 21 disposals at 81 per cent disposal efficiency, while Jasmine Ware was best-on clunking 10 marks – six contested – from 20 disposals and seven tackles.
