2024 SANFLW Team of the Week: Round 4
GLENELG once again found itself topping the Rookie Me Central SANFL Women’s Team of the Week representatives following a fourth straight victory in the competition. The Bays topped the league with five players in the squad, while fellow winners South Adelaide and Sturt had four, just ahead of Norwood and West Adelaide, the latter being the only losing side to pick up more than two.
There was no question as to the captain for the Round 4 SANFL Women’s Team of the Week, with top-age jet India Rasheed picking up 36 disposals, 11 marks, eight taackles, four clearances, eight inside 50s and booting three goals in a starring performance for Sturt.
She was sensational alongside fellow young gun Monique Bessen (29 disposals, eight marks, three tackles, five clearances and six inside 50s), with the pair named forward alongside five-goal star Zara Walsh. Defender Lily Whitcombe earned her spot in the team following a rock solid performance in the back 50.
Glenelg’s five-strong representatives were headlined by ball-winning star Jessica Bates who clocked up another 30 touches, as well as whopping 17 tackles and six clearances in the tight victory over West Adelaide. She was named in the midfield alongside opponent Zoe Venning who was the Bloods’ best, picking up 28 disposals, four marks, seven tackles, two clearances and two rebound 50s.
Top-age talents Poppy Scholz (16 disposals, six marks – two contested – and 10 tackles) and Violet Patterson (25 disposals, four marks – one contested – 10 tackles, four clearances and two inside 50s) both made the squad, as did AFLW-listed players in Piper Window (24 disposals, seven marks – one contested) – five tackles, five clearances, five inside 50s and a goal) and Brooke Tonon (17 disposals, nine marks – three contested – and five inside 50s).
West Adelaide was gallant in defeat, with defensive duo Lucy Boyd (21 disposals, five marks – two contested – seven tackles and seven rebound 50s) and Jessica Chyer (14 disposals, four marks – two contested – and five rebound 50s) both deserving members of the side.
South Adelaide won its second consecutive SANFL Women’s match and picked up four representatives in this week’s side, with midfield duo Caitlin Couch (21 disposals, five marks, seven tackles and seven clearances) and Brooke Boileau (22 disposals, seven tackles, six clearances, three inside 50s and a goal) both making it. Forward Jess Waterhouse (19 disposals, three marks, five tackles, four inside 50s and two goals) and defender Tiffany King (13 disposals, four marks – one contested – and two rebound 50s) also secured their place in the side.
In an even winning contribution across the field, Norwood still managed three players in this week’s Team of the Week. Match-winner Kiana Lee booted three consecutive goals to help the Redlegs get over the line and was the easy choice for full-forward. She was joined in the side by the ever smooth-moving Najwa Allen off half-back, and midfielder Tahlita Buethke.
Central District duo Laitiah Huynh (21 disposals, six marks, five tackles and two rebound 50s) and Olivia Levicki (13 disposals, four tackles, 28 hitouts and two clearances) impressed despite the Bulldogs’ defeat and slotted into the starting side. The Roosters also had two representatives in defenders Laela Ebert (20 disposals, five marks and 10 tackles) and Amelie Borg (16 disposals, seven marks, five tackles and two rebounds), while Eagles’ back Klaudia O’Neill (nine disposals, five marks – one contested – and three rebound 50s) rounded out the side.
Those three losing teams also filled out the trio of emergencies with Julia Clark (North Adelaide), Shineah Goody (WWT Eagles) and Katelyn Rosenzweig (Central District) rounding out the additional three spots.
