A TOP of the table clash highlights Round 5 of the QAFL Women’s competition as ladder leaders Aspley Hornets play host to Bond University. The Hornets have such a percentage – 419.67 – that they are unlikely to drop out of the lead just yet, though both the Bull Sharks and Coorparoo could join them on 16 points.

The round is headlined by the massive clash with Aspley in red hot form this season. Winning more disposals and clearances than anyone else, the Hornets are the team to beat thus far, and are undefeated from their four games. The Bull Sharks sit at 3-1, but are the most dominant marking team in the competition, as well as winning it on the outside.

Aspley duo Lucia Liessi and Louise Tyson have been standouts through the middle for the Hornets, with Jessica Davey also stepping up around the clearances. The Bull Sharks will need to find a way to contain them and stop the flow to competition leading goalkicker Jessica Stallard (10 goals). Arianna Clarke (six) is fourth overall and looms as a key target for the Bull Sharks, while the likes of Imogen Evans and Ella Calleja are key around the stoppages.

UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND vs. COORPAROO

Third placed Coorparoo has a massive opportunity to entrench itself inside the top two with a win over the sixth placed Red Lionesses. The Kings are ranked second in both clearances and tackles, working well from the midfield, while the Red Lionesses are known for their contested work. It makes for an intriguing battle on the inside starting in the ruck and at the stoppages.

The stoppages sees the likes of Jacinta Baldwick, Grace Roberts-White and Lucy Schneider going head-to-head with Harriet Knifjff and Jane Childes, while Coco Garton is one up forward who can do some serious damage. Both ex-Firebirds in Gabi Simpson and Laura Clemesha are set to run out for the home side and should be fascinating to watch, while Chelsea Chesterfield is a player the Red Lionesses can ill-afford to let off the chain.

SOUTHPORT vs. MAROOCHYDORE

Southport returns home to host Maroochydore with the Sharks keen to stay in touch with the top four despite losing a host of quality players to Academy duties. Ranked first in hitouts and second across the board in most areas, the reigning premiers are always a threat, and the more wins they tick over while understrength the better. Maroochydore has some quality players, with the Roos the number one tackling team.

Though Southport is missing some quality players, they have the likes of Steph O’Brien and Megan Hunt providing bucketloads of experience. Other key players include Selina Priest and Maighan Fogas, while youngster Emma Suckling is enjoying her debut season at the club. For Maroochydore, Abbey Rankin is a key player on the inside, while Chelsea Gillard presents as a forward target. Double bottom-ager Lataya De Pauw is a name to remember for the future, while Sara-Jane O’Grady consistently puts in big efforts.

YERONGA SOUTH BRISBANE vs. WILSTON GRANGE

The winless Yeronga South Brisbane looked good in the first half last week, but will need to sustain it for four quarters as the Devils look to break their winless drought. They host the Gorillas in a winnable game at Leyshon Park, though maintaining their top five spot is on offer for the visitors who need to boost their percentage which is the second worst in the league, only ahead of their opponents.

Chelsea Winn is a key player for the Devils through the midfield, and will be responsible for winning the battle against Haley Jones who is second overall in clearances this season. The Devils will loo to the likes of Lucy Bellinger and Madison Goodwin as key players to break the winless drought while Peppa Poultney is another to keep an eye on. For the Gorillas, Keyshia Matenga has been in great form, as has Summer Hamilton and Charlize Anderson.
